Here in Louisville the world is about to end…because it is supposed to snow 3-6 inches today. People are raiding stores for enough supplies to last a month. The schools are already getting out at noon…and I plan to either run or bike outside when the snow starts! Louisville- winter wuss town!
What a bunch of pansies.
Here in Vermont our schools rarely cancel due to snow—the busses have the most bomber snow tires you’ve ever seen.—which really sucks if you work in the school system and your buddies are getting freshies on the mountain and then they rub it in.
I am from St. Louis, which isn’t the snow capital of the world, but it blows my mind how everyone freaks out here in Louisville. A couple of flurries and there are 20 accidents on the highways and people are running out for bread, water and milk!
Similar story here in Austin, where we got some rain that turned to ice and now everything is shut down. I really enjoyed my trip into the city this morning for the first time since I moved here.

Here in Louisville if anything falls from the sky, people forget how to drive and if the temp is below 40 full out panic occurs.
I remember similar comments every year from northern transplants when I was in college in Atlanta and the annual winter weather storm would shut down the town for a few days.
When you only get a couple of days of it a year, its more cost effective just to do what they are doing than to invest in snow tires and everything else it takes for normal getting around. No matter how much it amazes the hardened winter survivors from up north.
To me its like the warnings the national news puts out every summer to avoid exercise when its more than 90 degrees and humid out; that’s fine in some parts of the country but it would shut down training and racing for 3-4 months down here.
Yeah that’s pretty wussy.
However when we got our first snow 1-2 inches, the weather people were telling us that we were getting 6-8 inches so people were driving like they were in a blizzard although it was nothing more than Flurries, it really pissed me off. Made me late for a workout…bastards.
Oh by the way I’m talking about Minneapolis where snow is not a new thing to see.
Enjoy your workout.
Seattle has got to be much worse. The city shuts down at 3 inches. The school close. Busses slide down Queen Anne Hill… And there is always some guy on the news, dressed in a parka, reporting on “WINTER BLAST 2005!!!”
Hilarious.

I lived in Seattle several years ago and heard about people abandoning their cars when it snowed. Coming from Spokane, I couldn’t believe it until one year it snowed and I was working in downtown Seattle. There was less than an inch on the ground when they closed our offce (I worked for the City) and I managed to cram myself onto the bus when the driver informed us we were going on a “snow route” which meant no one was getting their regular stop. I think I had to walk close to two miles that evening to get home.
That was not hilarious.
I thought you rode your bike to work?
BTW, about that payment, you meant in pennies, right?
Go find yourself a trail in the woods (usually warmer in the woods) to run on. There’s nothing more peaceful and enjoyable than a trail run during a snow.

My favorite is to go running at night after a good snowfall. It’s so quiet, peacefull and beautifull.
That was before I was into triathlons. I did rollerblade a lot back then. I was a dork! WAS
This week I’ve got a big goose egg in the bike column and it’s not even snowing here. My hat making side show is turning into a circus and I’ve been at the fabric store everyday this week. Thank goodness for master’s swim.
There’s snow in our hills so we’re thinking of snow shoeing this weekend. Woo ho! Bring on the Bailey’s and the hot chocolate.
We relocated to San Diego from central Washington - eastern slope of the Cascade Range. It will often snow 6-12 inches in the Winter. There is no such thing as a Snow Day (closure) for the schools, but my kids always hear from their buddies in Seattle or Portland how schools close for an inch of snow. Just before our move, my oldest (third grade at the time) asked excitedly if San Diego schools would close if it snows. I had to give him the good news/bad news scenario. Good news: the schools will definitely close. He was insane with happiness; however, he didn’t like the bad news: he’ll be out of college before it ever snows in San Diego.
bailey’s and hot chocolate. yeah. that’s a good idea before running!

AFTER. DUH.
Chocolate anything is a recovery aid.
I loved how in Cleveland this morning - the radio weather lady stated,
“It’s funny when you live in a city where it has to warm up - before it will snow”
We had 4 degrees here at 8am
.
sidenote:
when I was in college, I worked in the Hershey chocolate factory.
BRRRRRR!!!
I miss waking up to fresh snow but having to get out of bed to go to work SUCKS! When I lived in Spokane my car window was slightly ajar one cold morning so I muscled the handle to get the frozen window up and the window shattered. I had to drive to work in freezing temps with a freaking tarp over the window.
Another time I had to call a tow truck to come unlock my running car because I locked myself out when I went to scrape the snow off the windows.
I am a challenged person.
One of my best runs ever came last Feb during an ice storm and I ran through Seneca and Cherokee parks. No one was out. No cars, runners, anyone.
