Ok, I’ve had it. My girlfriend is now referring to me as the Snotty Nosed Kid.
I bike, and my nose runs.
I run - my nose runs.
I swim - I assume my nose runs but I can’t tell.
My nose runs all clear fluid barely thicker than the water I drink and I’m beginning to believe I lose more fluid through my nose than I do sweating!
This isn’t just your occasional nose wipe anymore. On my hour long ride to work this morning, I had to clear my nose every couple minutes. Pack riding is a challenge because I have to find somewhere to blow out the old schnozz very regularily.
I have become an expert at the one handed blow (plug one nostril, blow, plug the other nostril, blow) and even become so frustrated that my typical response on the bike is now the two nostriled blow off the side and wipe with my glove.
There must be another solution!
Anybody else deal with this and or have a solution that doesn’t involve permanently taking Flonase or Nasonex (steroid based allergy medication)?
i usually get the super runny nose on all of my long rides/runs.
i’ve recently gotten the brown shit in the ears too…i’m not sure what it’s from. maybe allergens or something floating in the air? who knows…i’m not allergic to anything that i know of…but this was kind of creepy.
as for the original comment, group riding is a pain in the ass, but just imagine in a race…if anyone is drafting off of you, you’d have no problems getting them off your wheel!
When your eyes tear, like when you ride or run, most of the tears go down through the little holes in the inside corner of your eyes (nasolacrimal ducts) and end up in your nose. Maybe you just tear a lot. Also, if the air is cool your nose runs more to help warm and humidify the air. Helps keep your nose flushed out. Wraparounds might lessen the tearing…??? I wouldn’t know for sure on this latter point since I have to wear regular glasses.
That’s what those little terry cloth patches are for on your cycling gloves…
Yeah, but you shouldn’t have wring out your gloves after a 30 min ride! I’m actually serious about this. There’s everyone else’s amount of runny nose and then there’s mine.

Interesting thought. Are there anti-tearing products? Sort of the opposite of the artificial tears for contact wearers? Would this do anything, I wonder?
My dad, who rides like 300 miles a week is nicknamed “Snot drip man” He always has a drip of snot at the tip of his nose. It doesn’t gross us out anyomore, we are used to it.
I’m not grossed out by it and other than the slight teasing from my gf, I don’t even know if anyone else notices.
I guess I would just prefer not to have to deal with it all of the time and was looking to see if anyone else who has this kind of condition has a treatment?
I was hoping some medical type might read this and say - “ah yes, you have severe flowy nasalitis and this is the way we treat people with this condition.” Or have them say, “yep, nothing can be done short of major allergy medication which drys you out like an old corn husk and has all kinds of other potential side effects. so best thing is to suck it up and carry a hanky.”
Considered the chlorine thing but I haven’t been swimming in weeks and this is not a new phenomenon - it happens all year round. Mostly when I exercise.
Maybe the condition should be called “exercise induced runny nose”.
Its way worse after I swim, though - probably due to years of the effects of chlorine.
I always wonder about the long term effects of swimming in a chlorinated pool. I seem to be much more sensitive now then when I was swimming competitively as a kid. One swim and I sneeze and my nose runs for hours.
I would prefer not to be taking an antihistamine all of the time.
Dunno if you’ve taken Nasonex but I can tell you that thing works wonders for my allergies. I only “need” it during spring/fall pollen season so its not too bad. Problem too is you need to take these meds before you hit the allergens…
One thing though - I know my allergies are a lot less apparent when I sleep properly. For instance yesterday I slept 5hrs, sure enough, my nose was iffy all day. sneezing, running etc. Today, with 8hrs sleep I’m rather normal. (My nose will probably run if I bike now though, it hasn’t rained in a couple of days…)
A farfetched guess here on the ear thing - my dog gets brownish, red build-up in her ears and the vet said it’s a yeast infection. No idea if this could be the same for people, but warm ear canal, maybe a little left over pool water in there and bam - perfect enviro for a yeast infection. Maybe try eating more yogurt and drying your ears out with an alcohol/peroxide mix. Just a thought.
