Here is a good one. I have a felt s22 with cable stop mounts on the down tube that are welded to the frame. The barrel adjuster just screws down into this housing. Well today I was re-cabling the bike and noticed the barrel adjusters are corroded so I will just unscrew them and replace them. First side not a problem except that I had to break it free with a set of pliers. Went to do the second one and same thing. However this one sheared off in side the housing on the frame. It is a such an angel that I can’t get a screw extractor to it. Anyone got any ideas?
Yikes, you are screwed. Now calm down and think about options.
1.You might be able to jerryrig some sort of wrap around temporary make do clamp with stuff from the hardware store.
2. Probably should call the factory or your dealer and get a solution from them.
3. a framebuilder could probably tack a new one on.
4. make bike a fixie
Some if the issue is the why it happened. If you ride on a trainer you really need to grease up those kind of areas and the bottle bosses or they will oxidize if they are made of alum or rust if they are steel. By saying you had to use pliers means to me you had some serious corrosion going on in there. Not much you can do now, but try better next time to stay on top of the maintenance. Don’t kick yourself too bad cause I have worked on plenty of my buddies bikes that I just shake my head how much frame rot alum parts and frames can get. That is a pretty big problem because any of the options besides the first and last mean the
bike will be out of comission for some time. Hope that gets you pointed in the right direction. Those kind of problems always seems to happen 3 days before the big race.
I actually do pretty good bike maint. However, that is one spot that I haven’t taken apart for a while. I thought about drilling it out from the bottom and then re-taping it, but I believe a has a legde at the bottom to hold the spring?
You might could re tap the hole but sometimes those are spot welded, the local bike shop may have parts or could maybe order one from the mfg. If they can maybe the hardwarestore binder could work over the short haul until parts came to the rescue.
I think you’re right that there is a ledge at the bottom. Does your rear der. have an adjuster also? I think I’d just run the housing in as far as it will go and ride out the rest of the season. Figure out a fix in the winter.
I thin you’ve got to separate the problem into two: break the adjuster/stop bond, and access to back out the broken piece. Try solvents, weak acids, heating the stop, etc. Is there even a little piece of the aduster poking out that you can use to spin it once it’s loose?
Nope! it is flush. Took it in to my LBS, who has great wrenches and the reply was classic. "Man that is an easy one…use this, then use that, and this…
1.5hrs later…This thing is in here good. Lets let the rep see it when he comes through tomorrow. I am afraid to drill it out and re-tap with a thread insert. However, I can’t wait much longer. I may have to go buy another bike in the mean time.
