Snake Bite?

I have been told that I might have what’s called a snake bite?
What exactly is this… I have had so many popped tires over the past few months that I have to believe that I have this so called snake bite. Looking for some kind of an answer because I just bought some continental gator skin tires and don’t think that with those tires I could still be having these kind of problems.

A flat caused by underinflation or hitting big things. The two holes it produces look like a snake bite.

1/2 beer + 1/2 cider. Drink enough of these and get on your bike, you’re liable to steer into a pothole and flat

Your tyres can’t help you if you underinflate them. A “snake bite” flat is caused by the rim “biting down” through the tube upon impact with a pothole, curb, expansion joint, etc - and is largely caued by underinflated tyres. As stated above, they will always have the characteristic mark which resembles a snake bite - two holes, or little slits in the tyre. The best way to prevent them is to run a minimum of 100psi in your tyres (unless specifically noted not to on the sidewall), and to check your tyre pressure before every ride. (You’d be amazed hw much air you can lose overnight)

Another thing to look into is to make sure that you aren’t piching the tube when installing the tyre, which will cause flats as well (although usually you won’t even get down the block if you’ve done this).

On a somewhat related note, sew-ups never get snakebites.

Tubie’s can get snakebites. I pinched a tufo last year, i was warming up for a crit and had lowered my pressure to about 90-95psi becuase of the rain, i bunnyhopped a railroad crossing going flat out, but i landed square on a pothole that i didn’t see. Pinch flatted the tire, yet amazingly the zipp rim held up fine, good thing too becuase they weren’t mine.
