How mmany years have you been cycling at this level ?
Most recent HIM / IM Bike split.
Thanks.

not enough.
Maybe 200 miles this summer tha tweren’t in races. My olympic splits were around 1:06.

12,000 or more per year. 2:17:49 HIM bike split. But that was relay. Can’t run since I was hit by a car in training a few years ago. Still, I think that bike split is nifty for fifty!
Absolutely ! Hope your condition improves !
I really varies between 20 hour weeks and 0 hour weeks
Race season usually yeilds 14-16 hour weeks
Possibly 700h per year on the bike
.
In the 12 months before Cal Half in March, I averaged 24 miles per week on the bike. That’s been roughly my average for the past 3 years. I biked 5:37 at Caliman in 05 and 2:40 at Cal Half in 06.
No, this is not an endorsement of a “low volume” training approach. If I trained more, I’d be a lot faster.
Thanks Gary.

Those numbers “5.37” and “2.40” , don’t come from training 1hr to 1hr 15’ per week (or your 24 hours per week ).
What cycling training were you doing doing in the ten years prior to " the 12 months before Cal…" ?
Thanks.

In 1991-93 I rode more – maybe 50-60 miles/week. I raced mtn bikes and did some criteriums. Citizen-class only.
From 1996 to 2002, I didn’t ride at all. In Jan 2002, I signed up for some triathlons and started riding again.
Those race times are a product of (a) knowing exactly what workouts to do to get to exactly what fitness (in terms of FT), (b) knowing how to pace, and (c) having a carefully tuned bike position that gives me the most speed out of my meager wattage.
This is the absolute truth: I did zero bike rides from Cal Half in March 05 until 4.5 weeks before Caliman in Sept 05. I then did 10 training rides. Two long rides, and the other 8 were 1.5 hour hammer rides (92-95% of FT). I managed to lift my FT from ~200 watts to about 225 in those 4 weeks, and then rode 152 average watts to a 5:37 bike split.
Before Cal Half 05 and 06, I did a solid 8-week block of 2-3 rides per week, for about 70-90 miles total, and 3-4 longer 3-hour rides. My FT got up close to 250 doing that.
It’s not rocket science. ![]()
2 years of cycling.
Never quite hit 200 miles/wk, but got close while training for Kona. Did 112+ 4 times during training.
Kona 06 split: 5:22

Great response Ashburn , thank you. Some great experience and knowledge in there.
Cheers.
Besides your 4 long rides and sub 200mile weeks , what was your frequency per week cycling / spinnning please.
Thanks
trainer 1x/week, short outside ride or brick 1x/week, long ride on the weekend.
Thank you. Appreciate it ![]()
Genetics probably play quite a big factor here. I’ve got a friend in my tri club who has been doing no more than 1 turbo session plus one 40-50 mile ride on a weekend for about 2 years, and he’s posted a 2:31 HIM bike split on some pretty rolling terrain.
What’s more infuriating is that he has done absolutely no brick training in his life, and he still manages to run very very well off the bike despite riding the bike leg like an all-out ITT.
Oh and did i mention he never did ANY endurance sports before he took up triathlon 2 years ago?
In the 6 months preceding IM France:
Average 11.2 hours Total Training/week (min 8, max 18)
Until Late April: Spinning 4-5 hours/week
April, May, early June: 8 hours Cycling/week (one 5+ hour and one approx 2-2.5 hour)
Bike split in IM France: 6:12 (Hilly)
HIM Bike split in August (after 1 month off followed by one month training): 2:40 (Rolling)
Have done 1 IM, 2 HIM - Have previously been doing Sprints for 3 years (BP for Sprint 1:02)
.
That is all going into my survey thanks.
Thank you.
I bike about 60-75 mins 2 times a week and try and get 1.5-2 hrs on the weekend during the winter(all on the trainer.) When I am able to ride outside, which is like 8 months, my long ride on the weekend is anywhere from 2-4 hours if I am not racing. I have been doing this for about 3 years. I had never ridden a bike before that. I went 2:17 at Eagleman this year.
Mike
I’ve averaged 130-150 miles per week this year, with a top weekly total of 170 miles.
My oly bike splits are generally around 23.5 to 24 mph. I’ve only done one 1/2 Im and averaged a very easy 21 mph.
I’ve been riding since 1979 and started doing triathlons in '83.
