Be careful. Where I come from we call that a hustle. Next time he’ll ask you if you want to put some money on it.
Congrats. Sounds like it was a fun day.
“Fun”. Actually, it was pretty painful. Even moreso for me, getting passed by the eventual AG winner with about .5mile to go on the run (I was toast, having run about 30 miles in the last two months due to a hamstring injury).
Did you guys have a beer together in the parking lot after the race?
No beer (not sure they’d approve of that on a Naval Air Station), but plenty of water. We chatted before and after the race (I’d have talked to him during the race, but he didn’t catch me :-).
I meant to ask him what he thought of the run mile markers, which are and have always been horribly mismeasured (my first mile was 5:35, my second mile was ~7:20, and my last mile was ~ 5:00: gotta work on that pacing).
Well aside from the fact that you should both be ashamed letting a fat fuck like me beat you on the 2nd run you guys both did great. You are right about that 2nd mile marker on the 1st run. I did 6:07/8:13/5:13. I guess I faded in the middle and bounced back.
Looks like you guys are both very good athletes and I move up to that age group next year, which of course, makes one more person for you both to beat.
I look forward to seeing Smackdown 2.
If armytriguy were really tough, he’d challenge me to a triathlon.
I was thinking that he must be on EPO.
It’s funny how there might be some who think that, although I’m not that fast. I raced triathlons in the early 1990s, but didn’t do a single triathlon in the 40-44 age group (work, kids, etc.). I then came back and did my first ever duathlon just before turning 45. The next year (2004) I did very well at local duathlons, winning my AG at all three I did. One guy in my age group who has been racing the local scene for a while asked a friend of mine if he knew me. The guy then asked “where’d he come from?”. He didn’t know that I’d been racing many years ago, and it might have looked a bit suspicious.
Ken, even though I was joking about the pro thing, you’re plenty fast
Yes he is!! I haven’t done a triathlon against Ken yet but know I would be spanked handily as swimming is my weakest leg. Even on a good day if I was able to beat Ken on the bike I would never be able to make up the difference overall.
Yesterday was a lot tougher than I expected. I was sick earlier in the week and never got rehydrated from it. Then on race morning somehow my jetstream gets a crack in it and leaked gatorade out all over my front brake and wheel. Unfortunately I do not have any bottle cages on my Y Foil so was SOL. I tried drinking as much as I could before the race. I new Ken was going to take out the 1st run hard and that I had to keep him in sight. Mission accomplished as I limited the first run damage to less than 45 seconds. I think I paid for it though as I never found my rythm on the bike could not catch Ken. I came into T2 in time to see him heading out the other side of the transition area. I knew there was no way I could catch him so didn’t bother killing myself as there was noone coming up behind me. Ken is very strong. In fact I don’t know about this darn “old age group.” The second overall guy came out of our age group too so really Ken took third and I took 4th. You know its tough when you take 13th overall and its only good enough for 4th in the AG. No excuses though as Ken handed me my @** on a silver platter. Now lets see that does make it one win a piece. I think best two out of three is the best way to settle this. Ali and Frazier had the “Thrilla in Manilla.” I gotta find one more race for us to settle this once and for all;)
I recommend the new Vineland Exchange Club Tri on Sept. 24. It’s the same course as Thundergust…1/2 mile swim, 20 mile bike, and 4.5 cross country / trail run.
skip the tri and do the du! check lin-mark, there’s a new autumn duathlon at the same park as the Vineland exchange, it’s late october, I already signed up. I can watch you guys drive off as I’m still on the race course.
