Slowtwitchers in Bermuda

I just booked a last minute trip to Bermuda (Saturday). Does anyone have any info on swimming, bike, or run?

Thanks!

How much did that run you? I’m interested in taking a trip out there.

Flights were on reward points, accomodation is about 200us per night
.

Yeah, the accomodation is the killer for Bermuda. I work in Boston and a cruise ship to Bermuda leaves from near my work. I want to see if I can get some inexpensive tickets on there.

When you go down, drop by the Winner’s Edge bike shop, talk to any of the guys. Greg (one of the co-owners) was a fantastic triathlete in his day, and is still a pretty decent cyclist. I left Bermuda a couple of years ago, but there always used to be a group ride from the Flagpole (Front Street, Hamilton, across from the Bank of Butterfield) on Sunday mornings, if there wasn’t a race on. Looks like there is a time trial on Sunday (race calendar is up at http://www.bermudabicycle.org/) and they are also doing a midweek evening criterium series. Doesn’t look like there are any triathlon events this weekend (www.bta.bm)

There also used to be a group of open water swimmers who swam in Harrington Sound (from the dock across from the Harrington Sound Primary School) on the weekends. Not sure when they do it, but it may be still going on. Best bet is to check with BASA (the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Assoc) or with the BTA.

Have fun.

J.

Thanks Jason,

Any idea on water temps?

I second everything Jason said. I left Bermuda in 2006, but I used to ride with Greg and a number of other Winners Edge riders. In addition to the Sunday ride, we used to meet at 5:30am during the week for training rides (met at the round about where Johnny Barnes hangs out - just ask anybody and they will know where it is). As far as swimming goes, the easy answer is just head to the ocean. People used to meet at the dock off of Harrington Sound Road on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the summer. Although you will think the water is warm, people in Bermuda won’t be too excited about getting in the water just yet without a wetsuit. There also used to be morning workouts at the Warrick Academy Pool during the week. There aren’t many other options, so your best bet is to plan on swimming in the ocean while you’re there. I did most of my runs solo, but there were a number of people who ran track workouts in the evenings at the national stadium. In addition to talking to Greg at Winners Edge, try and talk to Neil de Ste Croix at Bicycle Works Bermuda (www.bicycleworks.bm). Neil has been actively involved in the multi-sport community for years and is responsible for organizing the relatively new “Escape to Bermuda” oly event.

Have a great trip!

i’m in Bermuda,
temps are nice right now low 70s daytime and mid 60s at night.
water is still cool, 67F

on this site click Detailed Public, water temps at bottom. http://www.weather.bm/
Marine will give you the winds. They’ve been bad but are calming down now.

Friday is big kite flying day and you may see the remains of that over the weekend.

Run is really dependent on where you are. If you are on south shore it’s quite beautiful.
the roads are narrow and the traffic is close but the drivers are pretty good.

be careful, especially when crossing the street and such, to remember that traffic is on the other side of the road. look the other way!

let me know if you have any questions.

in bermuda right now also and if you need more information on where to find training rides / swims etc just Pm me

but for the purposes of knowledge sharing: there is a race on tomorrow morning at 9 am at John Smith’s bay if you are here for it (ask the taxi driver where it is when you get out of the airport - you should be able to show up and do either the swim bike or the run) jason was right about the harrington sound group - but there is also a 25m pool in town at Saltus School you can use roads are best ridden on during early hours of morning - narrow roads and lots of traffic are no fun later in the day ask about the railway trails if you are looking for some good outdoor runs check out these websites for more info: www.maac.bm www.bta.bm www.islandstats.bm www.bermudatiming.bm
