Slowtwitcher Matty Aro in second place in Canadian Double Iron

Slowtwitcher Matt Aro is currently in second place in the Double Iron in Quebec. At two thirds of the way through the bike he is about 20k(12miles) behind current leader Eric Deshaies.Eric was the winner of the Ottawa Iron Dist Race last year. This is Mattys first time in Levis and he seems to be doing awesome. For anyone who is interested there are updates at the race website www.triathlon-levis.com .Wish I was there with him racing.

Thats badass!!! I think im sold on doing ultra tris!!!

Eric Deshaies is a friend of mine…well we are from the same team in quebec…, Espoir de Gatineau!!! GGGGGGGGGGOOOOO ERIC!!!

How do you train for an event like this? Is it that much different than an ironman? It can’t be double, right? How much training can a body take?

             Hey Jonnyo,good luck on Sunday!
The training is about the same as Ironman.Just have do do a few more over-distance rides and get used to riding through the night.Strength training is more important in Ultras as well. The nutrition is different as most people need more real food in an Ultra than they would have in IM.

First place off the bike was Eric Deshaies swim was 1:53(T1-1:30) Bike 10:36(T2-3:57)

Second place off the bike, ST’er Matt Aro swim was 2:11(T1-1:44) Bike 11:16(T2-6:48)

Third place-DAYLIGHT!!!

They are both still running !!

awesome!

Second place in 22 hrs and something, my patient just got here so I can’t go back and look.

CONGRATULATIONS MATT!!! Rest up and recover  (if you want my start position in 2 weeks in germany, its yours I won’t be needing it)

Hi Eileen, yes Matty got second in 22:45.Eric ran away with it and finished in 20:27.Awesome job to both of them.Next year Levis is hosting the World Double Iron Champs.Be there or be square!!

Oops, my last post didn’t seem to come across so I’ll try this again.

I’m finally home after the loooong drive from Quebec. I highly recommend the Triathlon Levis events to anyone…the organizers and volunteers made me feel like a member of their families…it was a very special feeling. Thank you to everyone for their kind words. Eileen, I’d love to go to Germany but I can’t afford it!! I hope everything is okay w/ you??

About 5 hours in to the race I told Eric D. that he was, by far, the best athlete in the race and he would certainly win if he didn’t do anything dumb. At this point, I knew I was racing for 2nd place which is okay too  He is an AMAZING athlete and I feel privileged to have raced with him. He is very strong, friendly, and very humble…quite a guy.

matt

congrats!

Awesome job Matt! That’s a smoking fast swim for 4.8 miles…followed by 224 miles at 19.9mph is really fast!

Stone cold cool.

Well done Matt.Great job out there. You are right about the people in Levis, they are great and I was very sad to have to pull out of the event last week.Next year though I'll be there and hopefully you will also turn up to have a crack at the worlds champs. If you win you get a Rainbow Jersey just like the Pro Tour boys. That's enough poser incentive right there.

Sounds like you are describing yourself. Congratulations on another rock-solid performance at an Ultra!

Matt—I am SO proud of you! I wish I had extra funds, would easily flip you a plane ticket, because no other Americans are going (and trust me, that turn around is very doable). dropping you an email on the other end in just a minute.

I kept telling you breaking 24 was so within you!! I knew you would have a great showing up there! The whole organization is SO top notch! But wasn’t that water sick cold on top of ALL the floating stuff in the river? Glad you had a great time!

Nick—good to see you  if you are still looking for a place to crash in the winter, would offer up my second bedroom if worse comes to worse for you. I have to warn you, I am in the process of moving and STILL renovating, so its quite a unique set-up, but mi casa es su casa and my boyfriend will be gone the entire time so it should be quiet.
