Good luck Dave! I know he didn’t want much attention, but it’s live now, let’s give him some ST support!

how is the world record slower than the US record? Wouldn’t it be the same?

You need different comm’s to verify a record, and UCI (world) record umbrellas other (national) records, but not vice versa. So if you went faster than the world record, but only had USA Cycling (or whatever nation’s governing body) and not UCI comm’s on hand, you would not get the world record, only the national record.
Good luck Dave!!!
Very cool!
Tracky question, what is the difference if at all from a “track†front wheel vs a road front wheel? I am assuming it must be the brake track?
Maurice
Not a lot of difference really besides no brake track. (stiffer built / 5 spokes for sprinters - discs on the front when available - fancy paper thin tires glued on) Many, Many people are running road wheels (front and rear) on their track bikes… probably the majority really.
Man that sounds lonely there, seems like just him and the coach…Is the timing right, if so seems like he a few K’s too slow. for either of those records…Maybe a huge negative split!!!
I was wondering about the Mavic IO, why it hasn’t been adopted on the road etc. I am assuming it is fast. I think what you’re saying though you is that it is used as much or more for stiffness?

That’s pretty stupid.

I’ve never seen any published data on the iO… I’d say it’s likely “fast’ish” (most of what I’ve heard says a little behind the HED3) at least for the time it was made. It is VERY stiff though (vs the H3 which isn’t terribly stiff) It also looks cool and Mavic supported a ton of champions with them over the years.
Josh (Silca) had a story once about trying to get the AUS national team on 808’s, showing them data it was faster than the iO… basically the coach told him if they lost on the iO’s, it was them, if they lost on the 808’s, it was the wheels. The iO has that mystique about it that’s hard to beat.

UCI requirements are very stringent to qualify for the record. While most National bodies are also pretty strict, it’s not hard to imagine some don’t quite line up with the same standards. It keeps a level playing field for WR attempts.

yeah a bit behind pace… the hour is brutal and you’ve got to be an absolute animal to ride it out after you fall behind. Hopefully Dave recoups quick and takes a shot at some of the shorter records as well while he’s in Aguas!
When I clicked on, he was at around 20 minutes and doing 41.8, then a bit later 41.4, and now about 41. Did he go out fast the first 20 minutes? What records does he have a shot at?
There are quite a few sprint style efforts (although some of the recent records in 60-64 are pretty insane!) to give a go, realistically for someone who focused on an hour it’s probably the 2k Pursuit.
40.653km - not the day he was looking for but a ride to take pride in. Finishing an hour from behind is one of the hardest things you can do on a bicycle… the temptation to pull the plug is always there. Massive respect for anyone that guts it out. Mark of a true hard man!
Do you know if there’s any place we can find the results of everybody else who’s riding? My friend set the 80 to 84-year-old hour record yesterday. And I guess there are some other attempts happening today.
Chris
Thank you for posting this, and yes, I have been flying under the ST radar on this attempt !
The Hour Attempt has been a long process, and I’ll tell you, that in a event like The Hour, it is not possible to do it alone.
Thanks go to Rob Van Houweling for the invite and putting this amazing event on. Imagine having full access to the fastest track in the world for a week ! It is still beyond my comprehension. My Coach, Colby Pearce, whose wisdom and experience are just beyond words as well. The Management at the Track: Juan is amazing. Its also important to recognize a couple of the ST folks who have helped, Dan Kennison, and Nick at TriRig helped with some last minute equipment acquisitions. If it not been for Nick in particular with his Alpha One rig, I would not have been able to do the event. And if anyone has every thought that Dan’s chain prep might be to ‘over the top’, it is something that is measurable and you can feel the difference. And for full disclosure, they did not ask me to prop them, and I purchased their product !!!
It has also been a tremendous opportunity to meet some other incredible Athletes from all over the World attempting to break every Track WR there is…
So the short story:
With some training issues, I felt the WR might be in reach, but not to far into the effort, when I settled in, I realized that it was not going to be possible. At that point, you have to get your head around the disappointment and decide that it is time to respect The Hour Event, and the folks there, then settle in and do the best effort possible. Things were relatively stable until it happened.
There is a time in The Hour that the door to the ‘Dark Room’ opens. It is unlike anything else one can experience on the bike. It generally happens in the 35 - 40 minute timeframe. You have a choice to make: ride into it, or say ‘I’m not going to break the record, so I don’t want the pain’. It really may sound like nonsense, but I believe that to be successful in The Hour you have to embrace entering that room and accept it.
And yes Monty, its a lonely place.
My splits fell, but I got it done.
In the end, I’m thankful that I had the opportunity to participate in this opportunity.
Thanks Chris, and to those who watched.

Good job again Dave!
*Fwiw although he is too modest to mention it, Dave does also have the Athlete’s (Merckx) Hour Record.
Another ST’er was sick for his attempt and had to pull the plug (despite being ahead of pace) 40 minutes in.
Great job guys, enjoy the flight home.
Good attempt Dave - way to enter that door.
Chris - What’s the latest on the Knoxville area track proposal?
Sadly it looks about like most track projects… in desperate need of an angel donor to really ever get any traction.
We’ve got some land options to use, but it’s still a huge chunk of change even for a basic track.
We’re looking into trying to get some “grass track” races set up, both for fun and to gauge interest.

At least you have the land. I think there might be a few or more of us who would drive over for grass track racing.
Sorry to derail Dave.
