Something seems fishy about the calc for riding angle on Slowman’s cover article. The left edge of the white tape is 14cm from the back of the saddle. I get about 102* from that tape thru the BB vs. the floor. That should mean 102-90= 12*, 90-12 = 78*. Since the Soloist goes from 73 to 76 degrees (I think)… that means somethin’s up. I’m pretty sure that isn’t 78 degrees.
Actually, the bike’s kinda heavy, and I’m experimenting with removing parts to lighten it. My tests so far indicate that I need to keep the crank on there.
I wasn’t sure if you had some new Schmoke or Tune uberlight crankset made from a combination of unobtanium and vaporware. In either case, I look forward to our board math geeks figuring your geometry paradox out. Me, personally–I was assured there would be no math in adulthood.
Looks like around 78 to me. 80 would put your seat in-line with the BB.
But, the larger question is why are you setting up the front end like that?
What do you mean? Why the Hed bars? I have a road bike, this is my TT/tri bike (when cranks are on there :-)). I’m actually thinking I’d prefer to be lower/more forward when not on the aero bars, which has me thinking a traditional base bar like the Easton would be better. I don’t want to lower the aerobars any, so taking more spacers out isn’t the answer.
The STA of the soloist steep is to the center of the seat clamp. Follow that angle up to the saddle, measure to the white line. It’s roughly 1 cm per degree of STA - depending on your inseam, of course. From here, 78 degrees looks about right for that piece of tape.
That is one short, short top tube. You mut be all legs.

Interesting! I’m 5-10.5", wear a 32" inseam. I think I have about normal proportions, though I know from a very reputable pro fitting that my femurs are short(ish). The frame’s a 56cm, and I’m riding about 1-2cm more forward than the seatpost would allow if facing rearward. I ride my 73 degree Colnago all the way forward on the (Fizik) rails for road position.
I had a “critique my position” thread in here somewhere if you want to see how I fit on it.
Yep. Rolfs. Trying to figure out how to get a Powertap built into it and still use the same shape spokes as in the front (very flat).
Ex-rower… thanks for measuring that. Very interesting that Cervelo says the Soloist runs between 73 and 76 degrees. I guess it’s Slowman’s method of using 14cm from the back of the saddle. In that case, I agree that 77-78 degrees is about right. I’ve fiddled with it some, and prefer this position. Any further forward seems to sap the power out.
Aztec, Do you find that your frame is a bit big. I am the exact same size and inseam and I am on a 54cm Dual. It fits great. I have a 100mm stem on that and the seat post is not that high. I am a bit more higher in the front due to some poor flexibility in the hams and lower back. I am working on going lower with more stretching, massage and yoga.
I looked back into your other post and I think you said that you were using a 80mm stem and you had to drill out the pads on the aerobars to work. Again that would tell me that the bike is too big even though you did make it fit you. Do you find the steering very quick and twitchy.
Just some thoughts coming from a 5’10.5" 32" inseam guy on a Cervelo.

That’s a good question. If I rode a smaller frame, the head tube would be too low, or at least be so low as to require a ton of spacers below the stem. That was my problem with the P2K… too many spacers, and a larger frame would be way too long in the top tube (as it was, the 55cm was a little too long since I didn’t want to ride any further forward vs. the BB than you see me on the Soloist).
So, no, I don’t think it’s too large. If I could, I’d shorten the top tube by 2cm more, but that’s not at option.
As for steering, it seems OK. Not the touring bus that the P2K was, but not a big issue either. I recognize that the Soloist’s road geometry “costs” me something there.
