Slowman/Xantusia Safe?

Slowman,

Is the compound safe from the flames? Thought of you this weekend as the ash cloud came over the mountains and covered the coast.

thanks for inquiring. actually, we’re more than fine. since there are santa anas blowing, the ash and smoke is getting pushed toward shore. the fires are on the seaward side of the mountains, and we’re just over on the other side, so you’d almost not know there’s any fire from where we live, except you’d have to drive through one or more of several fires to get to us if you’re down in the L.A. or san diego basins. when the santa anas die down, then we’re screwed.

but i must use the term “we” loosely, as monty is holding down the fort and i’m up in yosemite right now.

all that said, it’s unbelievable. i’ve never seen anything like this. i thought the fires were bad last year, and i thought socal had escaped it by virtue of it being the end of october and we’d had good luck all the way through. but this is far worse than last year.

i thought people who rode bicyclists off the road were the most elemental of scum, but they’ve been replaced in my heirarchy of deviants by arsonists.

Well I’m glad to here that you’re ok for now. Hopefully by the time the Santa Ana winds die down later this week they will have gotten some of it further under control. I ran on the treadmill inside my garage on Sunday and couldn’t figure out why six miles was feeling so hard until I realized that the winds had shifted and I was sucking in ash/carcinogens with every breath. Even if the fires are controlled prepare for pulmonary purgatory if the marine layer pushes the smoke East.

Keep us posted (pardon the pun) if things take a turn for the worse as the week goes on.

Best of luck,

IAG
