Anyway, yes - this is a good idea. Serves many a purpose. I for one would like to be remembered in this way (and on this site no less). If it helps to keep others minds in the game (so to speak) and safer, then all the better. I only hope the list stays small…
Hmm. As some people said, its hard to respond truthfully here sometimes for fear of being flamed; just take a look at your “read” count, or even on threads where people have died - there are so many who will read but not post. Personally, I usually don’t reply anything because if I don’t “know” the person, I feel no business in commenting, or sending my sympathies to people who I’m not even sure even “knew” the person in question.
As with other people who ask for separate forums, my main concern is that there will be less traffic there. On the main forum you’ll have a LOT more people seeing the notice; and can ponder the everyday risks they take when cycling aggresively.
I’ll admit, reading memorials can be interesting. I read about Mr.Clay on velonews and he seemed like an amazing person. I guess that’s why A&E’s “Biography” is popular - people lead amazing and interesting lives. But who would be writing these? I’m not saying we need journalistic integrity here but I’m sure the families might not want all the publicity, and the facts have to be straight… I guess I’m just weary… I know this is a whole other can of worms but I prefer my anonymity on the net.
Last but not least, yes, reading about these accidents does make me more “aware” but truthfully, I never really slowed down until I got hit by a car a few weeks ago. I think most people only learn the “hard” way. Reading about these other deaths made me realize how lucky I am. Seeing the look of panic on my gf was what really changed me. I know if I told my parents what had happened they would probably try everything possible to prevent me from riding ever again. Memorials are respectful but sometimes I wonder if its none of our business… (ie. especially if you don’t know them. (rubber necking?) Most likely the people who really knew them will remember said person in their own, right way.)
My take on this would be a place where local road hazards and problems could be posted as well as other issues related to safety.
That’s an interesting idea. The free Google api might help by providing a mechanism to note dangerous areas on a map… If the idea gets any traction, I would be willing to look into making a mapping interface where we could add “dangerous areas” and known road hazards.
