Slowman, Poll question - suggestion

Slowman,

How about having a poll asking about wrenching, as in who (mostly) does your wrenching? I’m interested in finding out how many of us do our own. I’m sure I’m not the only bike wrenching geek/fan

  1. What’s wrenching?
  2. Myself
  3. Spouse
  4. Well meaning Friend
  5. LBS
  6. Team mechanic

(Me, I do about 98% of my own. Ocassionally my “Bike Whisperer” (that’s what he deservedly calls himself) gets some of my business if I’m busy or don’t have the right tool.)

Or how about "What wrenching do you do?

  1. I wash my bike only
  2. I replace tubes/tires
  3. I replace brake pads
  4. I do chains and cassettes
  5. I do it all
  6. I build my own wheels too
  7. I’ve built my own bike from tubing or carbon

I wonder how he comes up with the polls. I suspect it’s to provide information to someone. Either to show to potential (and current) advertisers. Or maybe someone is paying him for the information he gathers.

I also wonder why there’s no data base on the previous polls. The above would answer that.

i’d check1-6, but i hate cleaning my bike. I also don’t have a headset press. Other than that, i do everything, including building my powertap wheel.

so what if he keeps this site ‘afloat’ using $$ from the sales of informal polls. is there anything morally wrong with that? ST is a gathering place of HUGE amounts of athletes. seems like the best place to do market research really.

You’re right. I was interested in information, he gathered and provided it - recently it was about how long users had been registered. However, to my knowledge no one paid someone. Taken as a whole, I still think the OP sounded cyncial.

I never said anything was wrong with collecting the data/info to sell. I agree it’s good business. I just think it’s one of the reasons we rarely see the results. And that he hasn’t chimed in to this thread.

not at all cynical. I was just stating what I think happens. I have no problem with people making money. I don’t even fault WTC for what they charge for races.

Hey, lets not use “WTC” and “Slowman” in the same sentence regarding money. That’s ain’t right.

Server space doesn’t come cheap, especially a site that gets the traffic like this one. ST does a great job of gathering data for us and triathlon advertisers, and putting it out there for all to use. I don’t begrudge Slowman any revenue from advertisers because I get great value on on this site. Heck, the posts from Mr. Tibbs alone are worth it…cue weird Chrissie post

AND, considering the amount of bike porn that is shown here, some of you should be on a monthly subscription. I’m not kidding.

These are kind of the same since my team is sponsored by a bike shop.

    Pretty much everything on the track bike.

In general, I’ve found you’re going to have to do a little better than that to get his attention.
