Slowman - Can you split the forum?

Is it possible to have a split forum? Like a different room where people can discuss politics / religion etc? There is another on line forum I follow where they have done it that way. Just an idea to maybe help slowtwitch maintain its tri focus.

My C$0.02 (actual US$0.0133)

My vote on that is “why”? People can read the topic…dont like the topic, dont look. Pretty easy huh?

I rarely go off the first page. Sometimes I miss the threads I like because they get pushed down so fast by the political stuff. I generally don’t read those posts but it is more of a convenience thing.

I support Mr. Tibbs Velvet room.

Yarf I had that problem and then I changed my display settings to show 200 posts.

I ask the same question. No need to split it with subject line present. If you don’t like the subject, don’t read the post.

Now the Tibbs Velvet Room – interesting, but not sure I’d visit that part of the forum. I think it would make me feel dirty. You know, the kind of feeling you have when you leave a cheap strip bar. On second thought . . .

You’d just have to pay to get in, and then once you were your mouse would keep sticking to the mouse pad.

Hey Yarf -

Did it dawn on you that other people might actually ENJOY having a diverse set of topics in a single discussion board? Personally, I think it’s kind of nice to talk with other triathletes about something other than aero wheels and seat tube angles. For Christ’s sake, you can only have so many “Should I shave my legs” posts before you lose your mind. If you can’t handle deciding which posts to read and which to ignore, cruise on over to trinewbies.com where they’ve taken the liberty of deciding for its members what’s appropriate to post and created separate forums accordingly.

Tibbs,

Do you keep the bunnies in the velvet room?

Woah. Someone sounds grumpy today. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t think it’s bad to talk about non-triathlete activities. I contribute to OT posts occassionally. But part of me thinks it would be nice to have on-topic (read: tri based) posts separated from off-topic posts just for sake of organization. Chances are, I would still read both groups but it would separate things out in the event that I didn’t want to.

But whatever. It’s not my board. If something gets posted and scrolls off the first few pages that I don’t check, then so be it. If all else fails and I wonder about it, “Search” is a wonderful thing.

Thanks for the support. I am going to try HID’s suggestion. But my computer isn’t that fast so I don’t know…

Yarf, my computer is slow too, I changed it to 50 instead of 200, didn’t notice any change in speed. Now I basically have 2 pages on the first page. Thanks Hid, as usual I never figure out more than the bare necessities for any thing.

Not grumpy at all. Just irritated that Yarf suggests changing the board’s format (which affects everyone) because: 1) He finds it too “inconvenient” to check the second or third pages for new posts, or 2) He can’t help but click on off-topic posts, or 3) His computer is too slow to increase the number of posts displayed on each page. He could solve any of these problems on his own. Furthermore, Dan’s proclaimed this forum “not a triathlon forum, but a Lifestyle forum frequented by triathletes.”

BTW - I count 19 of 25 posts on page one as being on-topic. I don’t think any new posts are getting “pushed down…fast” as a result of off-topic posts.

I would vote NO to this. It’s easy to ignore the political posts, if one desires.

Having one forum allows me to be shortsighted and make sweeping judgements about people because of their politics. Don’t take that from me Slowman!

Listen jackass. I asked a simple question. I stated it politely and publicly. It is obvious from the replies that people don’t agree with me. Fine, so be it. R10ti’s reply, while strong, was civil. So was everyone else’s. Why can’t you be civil? I didn’t say it had to be that way. I just asked if it was possible and outlined why I, personally, would prefer that. I didn’t impose on you. I didn’t speak for others, I didn’t attack your family, I didn’t piss in your corn flakes and I didn’t need to be slammed. Some people have a spelling check - you need a manners check.

It’s not bad enough that the swim is so damn short - now I have to put up with assohles like you all the time. I’ve had enough of that crap.

I’m definately not skinny. Might be fun though. I have had a shitty day at work and have a short fuse for people like jhendric today. Tomorrow, he’ll probably be my best friend…

You should get some aero parts for it. That will make it faster. Also a new Renn disc may help.

The swim should be longer! Give us fish a chance!

Please split the forum! National or international politics and the Bush bashing bulls!#$ has about has much place on this board as crack smoking techniques.

Your request to Slowman to change the forum, if implemented, would affect everyone (and yes, that would impose on me, so I took exception). As such, I outlined my reasons for disagreeing with you (as you outlined your reasons for wanting the change). Sorry for being blunt, and coming across like a jackass.

and now we can be best friends…

You’re right. Furthermore, one really can’t appreciate whether someone’s opinion on seat tube angle steepness, clinchers vs tubulars, or Campy vs Shimano is valid unless he/she knows where the person stands on Iraq, gun control, and gay marriage. ;p

Oh, wait…we haven’t talked about gun control…
