Slipping Rib Syndrome

Yep, that’s me. I bet you’re wondering how I got here…

I was tossing one of several hay bales into the back of our SxS ATV and felt a rib pop out of place, left side, rib 8 or 9, anterior-lateral chest wall. It immediately reduces but every time I bend over to lift anything heavy or bend and twist, it pops in and out again. Mildly annoying, not exactly painful but can be if I’m lifting heavy when it goes.

Doesn’t seem there’s much to do about it except to stop doing the thing that makes it happen, but…that ain’t happening. Anyone have experience with this, and what do I have to look forward to in terms of physical therapy, active recovery, recurrence, etc.

Did this a handful of years ago playing men’s league hockey. Torqued it just wrong and pop.

Like you said, not much to do. I went easy for a bit. NSAIDS. Took like 4-6 weeks for the cartilage tear to fully heal. Totally recovered, no recurrence.

Sucked to sleep first few weeks. Needed to barrel roll to get up out of bed. Don’t sneeze.

I assumed this had to do with BBQ

Well at least you didn’t remove a rib so that you can… never mind.

I only need to bend my neck for that.

Good to know. It really isn’t painful, just WTF and waiting for excruciating pain that never comes.

I keep 50lb adjustable dumbbells in my call room at work. The only time it’s popped since is when I’m leaning over a chair and twisting to pick them up… Easily avoidable, so hopefully not tweaking it for the next few months should give it time to heal properly.

I don’t see how it could heal at all while still playing hockey knowing what movements set it off.
