Slightly OT: best MTB for around $500?

A friend of mine is in the market for a new mountain bike and wants to spend around $500 (or less). Can anyone recommend the best bang for the buck?

Thanks,

Matt

Ebay
.

Agreed with Hickory: go Ebay

Used is the best bang for the buck if you shop wisely. Try also…

www.craigslist.org

and search a city close under “For Sale-Bikes”. Got a sweet Cannondale R900 for $500 (easily worth $200+ more).

or try the classifieds in

www.mtbr.com

Used. I have a Gary Fisher Joshua for sale, immaculate, $350-ish. A couple of years old, and prices drop precipitously. Don’t buy new, you get nothing for $500.

yeah, ebay. I just sold my 2002 Giant NRS 2 on ebay for $700. The bike cost $1500 new and I didn’t ride it that much.

If you know what you’re shopping for, are a careful buyer, and don’t need the latest whiz-bang, there are some great deals to be had.

Just don’t fall into the trap of getting emotionally involved with your bidding.

I’ve never bought from here, but if your friend is just a tiny bit mechanically inclined they can go online with
http://www.bikesdirect.com/

Never bought from them myself, curious as to how it goes.

Bought several bikes and frames new online via coloradocyclist and other retailers. Need a bit of mechanical aptitude to properly setup the bikes even if they’re almost completely assembled. Bought several 3000 frames for less than 1000 used on EBay - but buyer beware…

Kona Cinder Cone
.

Hmm. Retail on a 2005 Cinder Cone is $849.

yeah, if he actually wants to go mtn biking $500 doesn’t buy much. Ebay and a year or two old bike that originally cost $1000+ is the best bet. Or check out Supergo.com and jenson.com as they sometimes are clearing out old mtn bikes. Look for KHS, Kona, Jamis and other similar bikes on closeout.
