Slap me straight - to GURU fit or to not?

Been working hard in the off season to increase the bike fitness. been a 20-50% AGer and was on a road bike till this off season when I went and got a P2. I know I should have gotten a Guru fit beforehand, but I didn’t so I’m just going to skip over that transgression. that said, I did some basic measurements to make sure the P2 would work, and it does fairly well. I feel good in it.

I’ve dialed in my fit as much as I can with the fit article on here talking about knee, hip, shoulder angles. It feels good and I’ve trained on the trainer in that position all off season and made some serious gains (in my mind). Increased FTP by 20W and just feel all in all stronger. Did a TT series this spring and was in the 25-30%. The goal is to consistently get in that top 20%.

I have some shifting around on some indoor trainer rides due to some “region” annoyance (wouldn’t call it pain but maybe light discomfort), but it is dependant on the day/workout. That said, I just went for a near 3 hour ride outside on Sunday and the IF for the ride was 0.94 and I felt great. No discomfort, stayed in the bars all day and was just an awesome day.

I had planned on getting a Guru fit this week, but after this ride, it has me questioning if I can save the $$ for later ($300 isn’t just popping up anywhere these days, especially with a 2nd kiddo having arrived 5 weeks ago). I know I can probably see gains from the Guru, but am just trying to weigh the benefit for the cost. I literally change my mind hourly, but am starting to lean towards holding off.

Interested if others had similar predicaments/struggles. Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Getting “guru fit” is a misnomer. A guru bike is just a tool for use by an educated fitter. What you need to look for is a fitter that has been certified through a reputable process (such as FIST or comparable) and/or is highly recommended and then go to them regardless of the tool they use. This forum is a great place to get recommendations on fitters in your area. Slowman will tell you that the guru fit bike is an awesome instrument, but it’s not a magic wand. It is still basically a computer attached to a fit bike, so G.I.G.O. (Garbage in, Garbage out). Good luck!

Good point. My appointment would be the fitter that is highly recommended here in the Chicagoland area.

It doesn’t sound like you have any problems that need fixing.

If the comfort is good, you might experiment with getting more aggressive, but definitely don’t make changes if you are anywhere near a race.

Guru machine + Retul sensors/ technology + experienced fitter is the nuts. I thought I was happy with my fit before I did one, but came out with a completely different fit (hugely different) and am much more comfortable now. If you have the money, do it. Don’t mortgage the kids for it though.
