Slam my SLAM....(critique my fit)

Well, due to my HVAC unit going down and needing replacing the new tri bike I was planning on buying will have to wait. That means that I’m going to have to stick with Ol’ Blue that you see in the pics.

I’ve replaced my old Profile bars with the Oval Concepts A700 Slam bars in order to get into more of a SLAM psition. A little background…I’m doing mostly Olympic distance races and if things go well (and my right knee holds out) I’ll finish the year with a 1/2 IM.

The grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

Its hard to critique the slam position, because in my non-accredited, amateur POV, its more about making the best of a bad situation.

Your leg extension looks fine, the oval bar pads look to be sufficiently rearward placed. Might I ask for what reason you’ve decided to go this route rather than a steeper postion?

Well, there’s really no way to get much steeper with the geometry of this old road bike.

Oooh, is that a Cannondale 3.0?
Glad to see a few still out spinning around.

Is that your mother-in-law taking th photo? You look pissed.

I can understand that you wouldn’t want to be hanging too far off the front of this bike, particularly if the front end has a crit geometry.

Try this as a compromise - get a zero-offset post, as opposed to a forward post, and move forward to about 75-76 degrees. Ditch the oval bars, and get a set of visiontech clip-ons of a decent length that you can actually pull on. Revel in your newfound strength. Tell me about that bike. I’ve got an old Cannondale the frame of which looks eerily similar to the one you’re on. I picked up mine for $120, and it stays on the trainer. I want to do some upgrading on it, but I haven’t pulled the trigger. It’s a 7-speed w/downtube shifters. Did yours come similarly equipped until you upgraded, or is yours a newer model that just resembles the one I have? I don’t know how old my Cannondale is. It has the train station on the headtube, though. It’s a dingy purple – dreadfully ugly, but remarkably tight for its age. I “ride” it almost exclusively from January until March.

So as not to completely hijack this thread, your position looks pretty good to me. But I’m a newspaper editor, not a bike fitter. And I’m not much of a triathlete.

Hey Robert,

Yours and mine are probably the same year model…i.e. farting dust about now. Mine also has the train station on the heat tube and I’ve figured it’s about a 1989/1990 model. I bought it very used a few years ago but it does have Campy Record 8 speed and Ergo shifters…so I got that going for me.

Ahhh, the old train station where Cannondale got its name…what a great story. Quinatanna Roo’s is just as good.

Your hat is too big. It is more aero with the bill towards the back.

In my estimation, your position is not a slam, nor is it a steep. It’s fallen into the cracks of neither-nor. Knock your saddle back about 2-3 cm and you’ll reach the slam spot, saddle-wise.

buh…bump!

my only advice is to go out and get yourself a good steak and creamed spinach…i can see in your eyes that you need a little more iron in your diet.

Lose the socks, hit the weights, and rake your leaves for god’s sake.

I would lower your hands about 1" more, widen you elbow pads to the next set of holes so that your forearms are about 3/4" wider. Then I would suggest raising your stem about 2 cm and move your seat back about another 1cm. Slam works better when you are higher in the front end and use your hands to establish a “boat wake” with the air to go around your hips. You are pinching off the Peck muscles with your forearms to close and it will hurt your breathing. You will probably need a little shorter stem also. I believe that the nose of your seat is currently pointed slightly down and that will be bad, the nose heeds to be about 1/8th to 1/4" above the back of the seat. Then rotate the seat to one side a little so that you are crushing your Prostrate and are riding on the Aductor muscles. Last thing, move your cleats forward a little more.

Those aren’t leaves, that’s pine straw and a pine bark walkway I’ll have you know!

John,

The pads are already at their widest setting.

My stem is a 90mm, 0.5degree. Do they make anything shorter?

Saddle is a Koobi AU Enduro, which has a slight dip in the middle. Comparing the front to the back they are almost flat.

“Then rotate the seat to one side a little so that you are crushing your Prostrate”. Owwwww, really?
