If you hand these guys $20 - 30, do they save you the $50 - 65 the airline charges? Anyone do this routinely?

Play naive. I flew last week out to Ca. and was only charged $10 as a second bag charge on the way home. On the way out I was only going to get hit for $10 as well but we flew early and they did not have a change bag yet so she deleted the charge. Sometimes you get lucky and they don’t know there is an extra bike charge. The website clearly stated $50 for bikes. Always print out the charge from website and have it with you. I have had people try to charge me $80 when the website said $50. Maybe trying to pocket $30? They backed right down when I presented the website info. Just a thought.
