Skiing Revelstoke ... how?

hey there
there have been a few Rev threads and now i want to go. i’ll be coming from the US east coast. what’s the best way to get there, what are the ideal logistics, should i combine it with something else, etc.

thanks

Come to the Alps instead!

Revelstoke is better than the alps but if you want some really good stuff come To Red Mountain!!!

Depends how you look at it. In terms of vertical drop, no. In terms of total area or slope length, no. In terms of pricing, no.

Also it’s not in the Alps.

And I bet a flight to Revelstoke would take just as long as one to Europe for the OP.

You have obviously never skied Red Mountain!

I have not. When I went out west unfortunately neither the expected champagne powder nor mildish temperatures materialized and I ended up freezing my ass off at -40 while also scratching my skis. Still enjoyed it though.

Red Mountain is the best hill I’ve ever skied. Great locals showed me all the secret stashes. Bar had great food. Accommodation is very cheap. And man is it steep!!

What is Red like? Steep like Jackson or Kicking Horse? Short & Steep like Taos? Is it near Rev and could I ski them on the same trip?

I say go, figure out how to make it happen. I went last year from Western New York, and while it was difficult to get to, and even harder to get back, I will go again.

Flight was from Buffalo to Chicago to Calgary to Kelowna. You could fly to Kelowna, Kamloops or Calgary. Calgary sounds a bit risky, as it is a six hour drive over the mountains. The drive from Kelowna is scenic and pretty easy, if there is not a storm in progress.

The mountain is worth it, terrain like crazy and access to anything you can handle. It is a new resort (say ten years) and the base and apres ski are a bit thin. There are a few other ski areas within a few hours and many people are drifting through in campers or hitting multiple areas. When I’m on a trip, I will do anything get ski in/out because I like to get up and go without wasting any time. If you don’t mind getting up and having a couple hour drive I bet there is some interesting places to visit launching from Revelstoke. Note if it snows, you will not want to leave. This place will keep you busy.

For me to get home, a red eye was almost unavoidable. I think there was a 6:00AM out of Kelowna that could have gotten me home, which of course is ridiculously inconvenient and not going to happen. That would be a 1:30AM departure from Revelstoke including fueling up and returning a rental car. There are direct flights to Los Angeles, however, so I booked some business there on the way home.

It seems completely crazy, but if you’re looking to get back to the East coast, it may be faster to fly to LA and then back to NY.

If they could improve one thing, it would be a flight at a reasonable time out of Kelowna to Chicago or Minneapolis that would allow East Coasters to get home.

I think it took me less time to get to Gulmarg than that…

the grand montets - 75 minutes from Geneva Airport - literally no end of opportunities to kill yourself…

If you’re thinking 1 or 2 weeks then the easiest way is to do a skiing package tour.
Shop around - Expedia, *et al *all have packages.

The resort also has links to package deals:
http://www.revelstokemountainresort.com/accommodation/deals-packages

You will most likely fly into Calgary and then its a 5hr. drive/bus ride. There are connections to Kamloops, BC that will reduce the drive to 2.5hrs. Most package deals take care of the details.

The skiing in the BC interior is EPIC!

thanks for replying. i read your thread last winter.

questions for you now that you have sperience:
do you still think ski-in is the way to go considering the dearth of life at the base?
does the Sutton/Town shuttle run well enough to be useful?
could you have looped in anything else?

the last question is the one i’m suffering with. the easy flights are Calgary, but then you end up all the way out in Rev. or you fly into Kelowna, and head back east, hoping to score a return from Calgary, airlines permitting. i’ve been to Kicking Horse and Banff. i would be happy with an extra day at either if i “had” to.

I flew from NYC to Seattle->Kelowna and we drove…stayed at the place that housed the heli skiing and went via cats-was a fun time, didn’t heli because the guys I went with got grounded the year before so they didn’t want to risk that again…was fun, but I prefer Jackson Hole…

How long will you go for? I would still do ski in/out. They have a nice work out area and an outdoor heated pool. There are a few places to eat and drink, and you could cab or shuttle into town for more variety.

I always prefer that though. I hate schlepping lots of gear and parking six miles from a lift.

Another thing to consider might be to head back towards Vancouver if you had the time. I did my trip in four days with three days of skiing. If you were doing a week you could hit up some other spots in Calgary/Banff or Whistler, as long as you don’t mind maybe driving in bad weather. I don’t know too much about those areas, but I do know they’re popular, and that sometimes one area is hit with fresh snow and others are not an hour or two away. Those who are mobile can capitalize on that.

wow, that’s a lot of travel. As noted above, skiing in the alps would be easier from the east coast. There’s a direct flight from Newark to Geneva, and from there 2-3 hours by bus or train to loads of skiing.

ok, i’m gonna do this. the lure is just too great.

as discussed, travel is a chore. that and i don’t have a lot of time. coming from the US east coast, Air Canada is the only significant player. that means Newark (EWR). which adds two hours of driving at each end. these are my options:

Rev:
fly on Tuesday; Newark-Calgary-Kelowna. land at noon, in Rev by supper.
ski Wed, Thurs, Friday
fly on Saturday; Kelowna-Toronto-Newark. leave Kelowna @ 10 AM, arrive in Newark 11 PM. LFD. home before the kids wake Sunday morn.

Rev & Kicking Horse:
fly on Tuesday; same flight as above.
ski Rev on Wed and Thursday
drive to Golden Thursday night or Friday morning
ski Kicking Horse Friday and Saturday
drive to Calgary Saturday night
fly on Sunday; Calgary-Newark. leave at noon, land at 8 PM. home late Sunday night.

option two sounds better for a lot of reasons but its more time away from the fam. which is not as good.
if it matters, Kicking Horse could also be Lake Louise or Sunshine Village. that’s further from Rev, but closer to Calgary. i have one day at both of those resorts and would be happy to go again.

thoughts?

scott_e: can i get from Rev to Kelowna for a 10 AM flight? i guess i could leave after skiing and get a hotel in Kelowna. i’m sure its a happening town.

(and no, i can’t imagine the alps are as easy as this in terms of cost to short-window travel)

If choosing between Lake Louise and Sunshine Village then choose Lake Louise. IMO Sunshine Village was more a collection of smaller hills while Lake Louise is one bigger hill. Of course I am an extremely spoiled skier though.

If you fly through Toronto you should be able to go to LGA. I’m dead certain Air Canada flies there from YYZ.

ah. i’m coming from Delaware so i’d prefer PHL or BWI. for this i’m willing to go to EWR but i didn’t look further.

It’s about 2, maybe 2-1/2 hours. if you wanted to be there 1-1/2 hours early plus time to get coffee and gas for rental car you could probably leave by about 5 and make it no problem

If weather is bad, earlier
