A friend pointed out that the results for SJIT do not include a penalty section, but rather add the penalty time to the run split to include into the final time. Penalties are denoted with nothing more than an asterisks at the side.
My friend got a bike penalty, and was dissapointed because adding two minutes to her run split was the difference between the fastest run and the 2nd fastest split (but could obviously be much more).
All the events timed by Buzz Word Productions use this method. Does anyone else think this isn’t fair? Shouldn’t penalties have their own column, independent of everything else? Has anyone seen this in other races that have made an effort to time splits?
Again, another good reason to just throw out the standings. If one is not doing this for their own personal motivation, everything else does not matter. Since everyone at one time or another could be found to be technically “cheaping” to the “official” rules, this cat and mouse game I see at races, … oh well.
This way one can do what they want and then look in the mirror and see if their time was “real” or not. It a lot of ways I think there should be no time penalties. If you get caught, you should just be DQed. Then your question does not matter.
I’ll tell you whats weird: the winner of the men’s 35-39 AG dropped a sub-22 minute 10K on the field to win in 1:48. I think this guy need to prioritize better, though. I mean, wouldn’t you have rather gone to the US Track and Field champs this past week and run that 10K? I guess that shows just how competitive triathlon AG racing is when a guy will opt to go for an AG win instead of a world record and spot on the national team for Helsinki this year.
Did the guy who ran the 22 minute 10K actually take the podium. I be willing to bet he was a no show. I’ve done San Jose nine times on three different course configurations and wheel suckers are a way of life in this race no matter what they do. It was a lot better race in the early days before the signed on with Tri-Fed. Everyone was racing for the excitement of it instead of personal glory at any cost.
I have recieved a penalty for jumping on a wheel on the uphill to slingshot by and although we were only going eight to ten miles an hour it was a fair call. Cost me first place in my age group and screwed up my run time. The lesson is it wasn’t worth it and I got what I deserved. I agree that they should just throw out the results if their not going to inforce the rules. Pretty pointless but J and A still but on a great event (just not necessarily a great race)

I’d love to meet the guy who did the 22min 10k since he’s about 4min faster than world record and if my memory is correct he’s in a world class categorie for a miler with a 3:31 pace (wr ~ 3:48)
