I time trial and do my AT intervals between 90-96 inch gear. When I just putz around on the fixe, I usually am mid 70s ish. I generally try to keep my cadence around 100. It is much easier with 165 cranks as well. G
during the winter when I’m riding on the roads I run a 46 X 17. It’s pretty hilly here in socal and I like that gear a lot. During the summer when I’m on the velodrome I’m running a 48 X 14 thinking about going to 49 tho. 71 and 90.1 gear inches respectively.
48/16 came on my Pista, but that is to high for anything but putting around town with. Maybe if I got a higher gear, I would ride the damn thing a bit more. As it is, decelerating is a knee killer.
I typically run around 69 gear inches for general commuting around the hilly Vancouver area. It’s enough to be bitch-ass hard on the steepest hills, and “I can barely hold this cadence” on the descents.
I switched to a 73 for a while after I raced it in Olver, but it was too much coming up the steeps from Kits pool. (Of course I’m not bright enough to find an alternate route, either )
69 is good for commuting, recovery rides, and general tooling around.
