Singapore 70.3 Official Thread

For anyone who’s interested. It should be a wicked race. They’re already out of the water and it seems like everyone is relatively close. Alexander in second bodes well for him and Macca is just behind and we’re all aware of what he can do on the run. Pete Jacobs is at the front, and he beat Alexander at Huskisson just a few weeks ago!

Who’s your top five? How do you see it going down on this course?

I’ve got

Crowie
Jacobs
Macca
Thompson
Rhodes

I think it’ll be one hell of a run.

Crowie wins it in 3:47, with a 1:12 run.

Crowie 1st - 3h"47’23"
Macca 2nd - 3h 50’41"
Thompson 3rd - 3h54’27"

3 Autralians in the podium !

Women:

1st: Jodie Swallow
2nd Andrea Hewitt
3rd Tereza Macel
.

that was about the worst coverage on Ironman.com of any of their races i have seen, what 4 updates? is it really that hard to update their own site?

We will see them at it again in 2 weeks in New Orleans, according to their website macca is racing and according to crowie’s schedule he will be there too…

I agree, that was pretty friggin’ terrible. For a race with that quality a field, it deserved a heck of a lot better coverage.

what was up with the amateur swim times? seemed all over the map.

Crowie wins it in 3:47, with a 1:12 run.

I just got back from watching the race.

It statted to rain at 05.00 this morning and was sprinkling up until about 07.00, the po race start.

Pete Jacobs was first out of the swim by a couple of seconds closely followed by Alexander , McCormack , Thompson and Watt and some of the pro women were right in there as well. The swim was 2 laps and the event had staggered wave starts so that may have something to do with the swim splits being all over the place.

The last I saw ( at 89km’s ) , Macca was in the lead by a couple of bike lengths followed by Crowie, Collucci , Thompson and Jacobs.

By the 5km mark of the run , Crowie flew past at my 400m sprint pace , with Macca following at about 50s behind already ! Crowie was hauling ass !

Shortly there after Collucci came by roughly one minute later and then Thompson and Jacobs , who went on to run together until about 15-16km’s.

I am nsure as to the exact finish as I was moving around a lot. But from my perspective it was Crowie , by about 4 mins over Macca then Collucci , then Thompson and Jacobs.

The ladies race was between Macel , Hewitt ,Major and eventually won by Swallow.

Unsure what happened to Rhodes and Keat as I did not see them on the run although Rhodes was seen to be 5-7 mins behind the lead pack after 30km’s which would normaly signify a technical problem or oherwise.

Sorry for the lack of accuracies as this was from my perspective and I’m rushing out for a ride now !

I was there watching as well. On the run, Crowie didn’t really look like he was pushing too hard and still managed to continually put time on Macca. Also Colucci faded badly towards the end of the second (of three) laps on the run. He went by me once and was about 10 seconds ahead of Thompson and Jacobs but then just 2km later he was almost 30 seconds behind them.

Just before crossing the line, Crowie turned around and bowed to the crowd. What a performance.

Also, some pictures… http://picasaweb.google.com/...nman703Singapore2009

any thoughts on the swim course? I was checking the times for my AG and they seemed all out of whack with what you’d expect for a half IM.

thanks,
Eric

Metal tacks scattered on road to sabotage Aviva Ironman triathlon
Posted: 22 March 2009 2128 hrs

SINGAPORE: A sabotage attempt marred the Aviva Ironman Singapore triathlon on Sunday.

While the cycling leg of the race was going on, some metal tacks were scattered on the road near the Keppel Flyover.

One witness told Channel NewsAsia about 30 to 40 participants had their bike tyres punctured by the tacks and had to drop out of the triathlon as a result.

In response to media queries, event organiser Hi-Tri said it cleared up the metal tacks immediately after being told of the incident.

It said few competitors were affected as the incident occurred near the end of the bike race.

Race director Graeme Hannan said it was a deliberate sabotage attempt and it was a shame that such mischief-makers have marred an otherwise great race.

Having been to Singapore, how they put a race like this on is amazing. There is not a lot of space in Singapore to do something like this.

As for the results - predictable.

Jodie Swallow - crushed it. Further evidence that those stepping up from ITU races almost invariably do well at this distance and puts to rest that old and tired saw-horse that ITU athletes - “can’t cycle”!

That being said, realistically it’s still early days in the season - so it’s never a good idea to read too much into the results.

Fleck,

You’re right on both counts, but I’d have to say there’s lots of stronger girls out there on the bike in ITU than Jodie, she’s an amazing swimmer, and her ability to really grit her teeth on the run is amazing, she pulled off some stunners (Huatulco, 2008). So you’re second point, it being early days will prove to be right too, there will be more of them testing the waters of 70.3,believe me.

There’s some pretty fly ITU guys entered for Oceanside in 2 weeks. Check out the English contingent coming across. Should be good to see how they get on.

Thanks for posting the pictures (!). Great training motivation, and it’s not the best weather outside…

Jodie Swallow kicked butt. How do this British woman keep doing so well?

Here is a link to a great start line image of the men from this day :

There is a link from there to the full race covered in photos.

I was pretty disappointed with the ‘ironmanlive’ coverage.
