Since we're talking about coaching programs

Reading through the thread about DD and SAC teaming up for some pro bono coaching (very cool, in my opinion), it got me to thinking—of the options out there, who uses what and can vouch for same? In all my years of racing I’ve never used a coach, but I think it might be time if I want to step up a performance notch or two.

Any comments on the variety of coaching programs out there would be appreciated…and I’m thinking in terms of something other than an in-person program.

I have the best coach in the world…for me. In fact, I’d say that he’s the perfect coach for me at this point in time.

There are many, many good coaches, most with pretty similar ideas, so I think it comes down to a personality fit.

Can you give me an idea of his cost a month? I went to the website and no mention of costs there.

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks…didn’t see that link. Wish I had that kind of cash to throw at a coach. Back to my own resources.

I considered siging on with Scott Molina, had some communication by email last year, but I can’t really afford him. He has a great coaching philosophy in my opinion. I do have a coach now who is qualified, affordable and best of all local. I really like the face to face interaction and the fact that he is present at a lot of my races. He doesn’t have to depend on me telling him how I’m doing, he can see for himself what I need. I log less hours now, but get more benefit, which I thibk is what a coach is for. Effeciency and physical economy…kj

Agree on the philosophical part of Molina, looks like he would be a good fit but $625 up front and $375/month is a tad out of the league I was thinking for the time being. Certainly looks like a very personalized schedule and interaction, however, which is a giant plus over something like Mark Allen’s online deal.

The search will continue…

Yeah, local is best for some. I looked locally, but there wasn’t the right fit, for me. A guy I train with just hooked up with a local coach here and it’s the best thing he’s done.

HA! If I had been logging less hours, I would have been in the negative numbers.

and the fact that he is present at a lot of my races<<

As will mine, at least at my two biggest races of the year…

I went from 15-18 hr weeks to an average of 12 hrs/week with 1 full day off per week (something I rarely took before). Another benefit I get is that my coach’s wife is one of the top masters swimmers in the world and she helps me out too. She frequently tosses swim workouts my way. Its like having 2 coaches for the price of 1…kj
