i personally fall into the category of, “i would post here more often but i don’t because of the toxicity here.” but i’m one of 43,000 registered users, and i weigh my own vote less than the votes of any of you all.
It’s odd to me that on a daily basis I post here and yes I get into conflicts with many but there are only 4-5 people in here that nearly every conversation degrades to name calling, degrading, twisting and complete mis representation of my position. You are one of those 4-5 people, when you show up.
I often have disagreements with others and in most cases can come to some amiable solution, “Agree to disagree” or actual understanding of their position or them understanding mine.
Guess what I’m trying to say is maybe, just maybe, the problem does not lie with the “Toxicity of the Lavender room”, but rather with you’re inability to accept other peoples positions and being challenged in your own.
Beyond this I’m not sure why one would need to alter the LR. If a person wants to discuss tri’s you have the main forum. Anyone who wants “Polite conversation” either on tri’s or slightly OT can go to the “Womens forum”. People come here because they want to go to the rough part of town. If I want to go out for a nice dinner with my wife, I don’t take her to some seedy bar. At the same time If I want burp, farm and go out and have a beer with the guys after working on the house all day…I don’t go to a nice restaurant.
If you walk into a room thinking that everyone else in the room are assholes, then more than likely you will leave the room thinking everyone in that room was and asshole. Furthermore you’ll like respond to them as if they were assholes.
If you walk into that same room with the attitude that these people are really cool then more than likely you will react to them as if they were cool and walk away from the room thinking those people are cool.
The idea that Slowman sees the LR as “Toxic” shows he walks in here with that mentality and likely approaches people with that mentality. That, IMO, pretty much puts a damper on his and or anyone’s ability to learn, understand, discuss rationally and civilly that walks into the room with than mentality.
I’ll agree I’m as stubborn as the next guy, hold what most would consider to be “Radical” views, but that doesn’t make me think the LR is “Toxic”, just that people hold different views.
Personally the fact that people hold different views is what makes the place interesting.
I WANT my views to be challenged. The more they are challenged the more likely I am to find problems with my views and or the more strength is given to them. At the same time I realize people are different, hold different values and will likely never see things exactly the same way I do. That does not mean I will never be able to understand where that person is coming from. However if I view them as “Toxic” and “I’ll never be able to learn from them”, it would make that next to impossible to do so.
Personally I’m not sure how anyone could come in here with even half an open mind and not walk away without learning something. I think I learn something new here almost everyday, it’s 90% of the reason I come here. Whether it’s a philosophical point made by RobC, something about gold from Chainpin, cheating Reps from Yahey, CO2 from jackmott or any other of interesting tidbits I almost always find something in here.

that’s not the case. i’m just always looking to improve the experience here. you’ll see a lot of “test” posts, and that’s from one of our developers who’s working on the forum right now. there was no specific thing that caused me to ask this question today, i’ve been planning to take the temp of our audience for some weeks now, and i had a free couple of hours to watch these responses this morning.
Hey Matt as someone who has hung out in the LR on a daily basis for many years now I wouldn’t categorize any of your posts that I can remember as ‘toxic’ by any means. You are consistently wrong a lot of the time but definitely not toxic.
Given that after reading these topics today I hope the small handful of people who periodically have a tendency to get into a rut of bogarting the place with post-after-post of copy/paste low quality bashing would consider that it is more enjoyable to debate intelligently (at least most of the time).
