Simple solution against drafting

Why just not draw a line in the middle of the road to separate clearly two lanes with every 10 meters a perpendicular sign ?

This would be a very simple way to figure out for the athletes and the referees if someone is drafting or not.

Just an idea…

cuz that’s a lot of drawing
.

180km of chalk!!! How about gps instead.

Burritos!

For an Ironman that would be 18000 signs.

Have you ever noticed that the biggest most popular sports are the least complicated ones! Have you ever wondered why soccer is the #1 sport in the world?

Sometimes the sport of triathlon is it’s own worst enemy - creating complex and complicated solutions to an already complex and complicated sport.

I think you forgot the pink font. Football, Baseball, and Cricket, three of the MOST popular sports, are incredibly complex!

Triathlon is NOT a “complex and complicated sport” in comparison to just about any other major sport in the world–with the possible exception of soccer.

it would only be 180k for non MDot races. And IM Canada.

You are right, of course, it’s just that many triathletes want to make it as complicated as they can. Many of the endless discussions and threads here are a perfect illustration of that!

One other problem is, is there suppose to be a ref every 10 or 20 meters, that could be a lot of refs?

Have you ever wondered why soccer is the #1 sport in the world?

I agree but have you ever tried to explain offsides to 10 yr old girls?

They did this at Ironman Brazil at least one year.

There were 2-3 zones of a series of lines painted 10 m apart. Referees did mark you down but it was also interesting for self awareness since people had a better feeling for what 10 m really was and could maintain it the rest of the race.

Road striping is 10ft stripe and 30ft gap. 30ft is about 9 meters, so if you are closer than that, you are too close.

Football is soccer anywhere but the US and Canada, and neither it nor baseball are popular outside the US/Canada. I would even say that baseball isn’t even popular in Canada as they can’t sell 10k tix/game for their remaining team. I think a more interesting discussion is what are the most popular sports in the world. Cricket may be up there simply from the population of India. Is golf a sport? Badminton might actually be up there, again, based on population in Asia.

Forgive a newbie question but what is the history/culture around the drafting illegality in Triathlon? In auto racing and cycling it’s an integral strategy of the sport. Is it because there is no “team” aspect to Tri? And why can you draft in the swim and not the bike?

Agree with you on American Football, but baseball is actually very popular in Latin America and the Far East.

Soccer is the only universal sport. Just about every other sport is at least somewhat regional. You could even say that because India and China are not exactly soccer hotbeds (China and India making up about 1/3 of the World’s population), even soccer is short of universal.

"How about gps instead. "

gps will never be adequate to prevent illegal drafting.

I wouldn’t say never. Just not in the near future.

The simplest solution is to not do it yourself.

if there is someone on your wheel just blow your nose… If anyone is desperate enough to draft and ride through the mist of your boogers then i say let them! haha j/k

Cheating only hurts yourself! Just don’t draft…

I’ve pee’d on people at Ironman FL only to have them suck wheel (and piss) for a long time. I’ll race my own race.

If you need to qualify so bad for Kona that you cheat you’re pathetic. If I miss (as I normally do) by 11 seconds, 27 seconds, 45 seconds and 2 minutes - at least I did it on my own.

I did Kona once. When I go back I’ll earn it again.
