Simple Help With Valve Extenders

Ok so I have never used but now am required to do so. It looks as though I have simple problem solver extenders and now want to install on my new wheels.

  1. plumbers tape is it required and where does it go - on the thread?

  2. If my valve is open and I pump it up and cannot close it since it would be buried in the valve - is this how it goes?

any other hints?

as long as it’s not a removable-core type extender with a rubber gasket, then you put teflon tape on the threads of the valve itself before you put on the extender.

the valve core will remain open and that is how you will leave it. somebody else can verify, but i think there is a way to pinch it open or turn it extra far to lock it out or something so it doesn’t work it’s way back closed.

I just unscrew my presta all the way, take my wire crimpers and crimp down a bit on it. NOT as hard as possible, just enough to keep it from working its way back down.
Screw the extender on

ok so I got the teflon tape no problem.

Opened the valve and put in about 90psi and all of the rushes back out. any ideas?

all of it rushes back out? When? Pump still on or after you take the pump off?

when I take the pump off and sometimes it pushes th pump off…I have no idea
.

Ok, from the start lets see if we can diagnose it.

1.) Tube is not inflated. You unscrew the presta all the way.
2.) You screw the Valve extender tightly down on the valve.
3.) Place valve/tube through the wheel.
4.) Put the head of the pump onto the extender, lock it down.
5.) Start pumping.

Same problem? Sounds like the presta is not fully open.

So the tube was inflating but was pushing air back out, I repeated the process with a second wheel and no problem. Looks like nothing but a faulty valve.

There are valve extenders where you remove the core completely install
the extender and then install the core in the extender
.

Wow! I guess you got the wheels pretty darn quickly.

The valve extenders can be a bit of a pain. You need to use plumbers tape between the stem and the valve extender, but you have to be a little careful with it. On occasion, it can catch the valve a little and cause some of the problems that you described.

If you don’t like the fact that you have to keep the valve open all the time, you can try these.

The Topeak ones work by creating an extension to the valve itself. You can open and close the valve using the extension.

The vittoria one has it’s own valve and doesn’t require you to have a fancy tube with a removable valve core.
