Simon Whitfield website

I just visited Simon Whitfield’s website and I have to say that I was quite impressed. Most of the triathlete websites I have seen have been solely about training and racing. Simon’s offered more and provided great insight into a truly remarkable person.

Form your own opinion…

Simon seems like a very likeable guy with a variety of interests besides triathlon. He’s sort of alternative culture in some ways and is quite a media personality.

I’d say Simon is well known in Canada even with regular folk who don’t have much interest in tri. In comparison, not many people seem to know about Peter Reid. So nobody should doubt the celebrity significance of winning a gold medal at the Olympics.

Living with dopers, that sounds like fun.

“He showed that last August when he had what many believe was the best run in the history of triathlon when he finished second to win $50,000 (U.S.) in the most lucrative race ever, the Life Time Fitness Triathlon…43 seconds behind winner Barb Lindquist of the U.S.”

Not to take anything away from Simon, but that’s the first time I’ve seen that run described in such lofty terms. Someone refresh my blank memory about Simon’s performance in that race last year.

Today’s run by Kate Allen certainly ranks way up there on the studley scale. And then there’s Mark Allen’s run against The Man in '89. Hmm, must be something in those Allen genes, eh?

The article on Simon’s site mentions him training with Jasper Blake, my pick for darkest horse this coming Sunday in Penticton. I want Gordo to win, but he’s up against some great competition, and I’m sure he wouldn’t want it any other way.
