SilvermAn Rumors

I heard today that SilvermAn will be back in 2012 and it will be a WTC event and carry the SilvermAn name (I heard the WTC bought SilvermAn). I think my source is reliable but I did NOT hear it from Frank, but I will ask him tomorrow, if I see him at the pool. I wonder if there will be a 1/2 along with it? I also understand and no surprise that Frank will be running it

I predicted it would be back as a an IM branded race about a year ago after the 70.3 Championship was announced. It will be interesting to see what changes they make, hope they keep the River Mountain Trail and the 3 sisters on the bike course.

Anyone else hear any rumors/details on this?

I don’t know how to feel about this…

As long as course is same/similar then I want in on this action.

nauseous

You mean ‘nauseated.’

I know how I feel about this. I’m glad I did the event in 2010. I suspect it won’t be the same under the WTC umbrella. Will I do it again? Unlikelier now, if this rumor holds true.

That’s funny !.. fortunately for me being a WTC lemming and a Silverman finisher I would only experience joy and not feel so conflicted. Drugs might help your pain???
I’ll believe its true when it gets announced … I’m still skeptical.

Dave

I’VE known Frank for several years, rode the courses when they were crazy idea’s in his and Paul’s heads…back out in Vegas for a convention, volled at 70.3 worlds, and put the question to Frank:

Definitely yes, it will be a WTC branded race in 2012. We didn’t talk details about the actual date, but it seemed like it would be Silverman, Frank and family running it, didn’t hear about any course changes, but it seemed like it would all remain the same.

I was planning on doing Silverman in 2012 just to do it and support the whole Silverman vibe/endeavor; I’m in even if it is WTC.

So I have to assume the price would be increased to fall in line with all the rest of the WTC races. I wonder if Frank will still offer everything else he did or if that will cut into the bottom line too much.

What are your thoughts on the entry fees? How much will prices inflate under WTC? They seem to be pretty close on the half distance (~$200), but when it came to the full distance, Silverman 2010 was ~$400. As a WTC event, is the full likely to be the typical $700?

But its worth every penny … now when you finish you can be called an ironman ;p

As long as Frank is running it and it retains the character of past Silvermans (though with more participants), I don’t care. I’m in. This may sound a bit petty, but I’d sure like to see it remain “Silverman”, and not “IM Las Vegas” or something.

A couple things come to mind:

(1) I don’t know of any Ironman races that feature both a full and a half, so the half Silverman might be history. (But then, who knows, Silverman could become a 70.3 only. I’d be crushed.)
(2) If this race were to balloon to 2,000 athletes like other Ironmans, I don’t know if Lake Las Vegas could accommodate that many athletes. The lake isn’t very wide, and the spot for the transition area may not be large enough. Definitely wouldn’t be a mass start, or it would be the mother-of-all-slugfests.

I thought Silverman was in Lake Mead?

Looking at the Lake las Vegas on the map it appears to be a little larger than Mirro Lake in Placid. So it would likely be about the same kind of slugfest.

These are just my thoughts/opinions but I’d like to see the swim moved back to Lake Mead, I thought the opportunity of having to do a rough water swim was part of the charm and character of SilvermAn. Lake Mead will never drop as low (Temperature wise) as what Lake Las Vegas can, Lake Las Vegas will never get as choppy as Mead can either. I don’t think it will ever move away from Lake Las Vegas, the resort I am guessing has too much to offer and contribute to the race, spectating at LLV is better than Lake Mead and it’s about 12 to 15 miles closer to T2 than when it’s out at Lake Mead.

I will bet that the run course changes some the, old Silverman run course took up a lot of intersections and real-estate, many of the intersections were open but manned by traffic cops which was doable with the #'s in the past, IM branded race will more than likely double the participants and make it nearly impossible for traffic to use the intersections as they have in the past, I couldn’t imagine a 5 loop marathon though.

If it’s just a full or half, again I’ll put my money on the full, I don’t see Frank doing anything half way ;). I also doubt that there will be a full and half if it’s IM branded, you’ll have to qualify for the Sept half I would guess.

Edited to add Lake Mead will never drop as much in temperature as Lake Las Vegas in a short period of time.

I thought Silverman was in Lake Mead?

It was at Lake Mead until 2010 and they moved it to Lake Las Vegas to do a trail run so to speak for the 70.3 and the ITU long course. One of the things they changed from 2010 was on the water exit in 2010 you had to climb up on a floating dock with volunteers helping pull you up. For the races there this year you exit on the other shore where it is shallow and run nearly a 1/4 mile to T1.

Just found my IM for 2012 if this happens! Was debating on trying to campaign the wife to let me to St. George again, but I think I could sell her on Vegas! We’ll see…

Yeah, I would hate to see WTC prices for an IM Silverman, but it wouldn’t surprise me. On the other hand, in terms of running the race, I think Frank would still offer above and beyond in the other areas. The guy was/is too good of a trigeek himself, has his name and reputation on the line, and too much personal investment to do the half-ass job that frequently passes for WTC goodie bags these days; and other small but important stuff that experienced racers notice and appreciate.

Either way, I’m inclined to roll the dice and see if the Silverman logo can stay in caps and the WTC be small font.

I would sign up for Silverman again in a heartbeat if it really happens … unfortunately if we all planned our schedules on ST rumors life would be strange indeed.

Several of us need to know before Nov 18th if Silverman will really happen in 2012 or we get caught in the IMAZ 2012 signup dilemma. If we wait per rumor and Silverman doesn’t come back… we have nothing to do for a fall IM because IMAZ will fill quickly.
Frank needs to tell us something himself… even if he just rubs his nose or winks his eyes … WE WANT TO DO SILVERMAN!

Dave (waiting for the wink Frank!)

I agree. I’d love to do Silverman. And I’d love to do Silverman even more if it were a WTC race with Kona slots. (ducking for cover now).

I did the 1/2 a few years ago and hope to get to do the full sometime.
