What is a rim?

If I buy a new wheel…do I need to buy a rim?

The rim is the outside “hoop” of the wheel. If you are buying a rim it is just the hoop. A wheel refers to the whole thing, rim, spokes, hub, these are the major componets of a wheel. If you buy a wheel you should however buy “rim tape” too. If it is brand new it is usually included.
