Silicone adhesive making tubulars more aero?

Did anyone else see on Cyclingnews how T-Mobile puts silicone adhesive between the edge of their tubular rims and the tire to help fill in the gap? This is supposed to make them more aero. Hmmmm. I wonder what the actual savings are and if anyone else has every done this.

I remember an article by Chet Kyle many years ago that talked about doing this. I never have. I think Avocet made a clincher tire long ago that had reliefs over the bead to smooth the transition to the rim.

I have a set of Michelin HiLite Pro 700x19c tires on one of our TT bikes that have the little fairings molded right on the tires. They are probably about 12 years old and I haven’t seen them in the shops for quite a while, but I used to win my AG in all the local time trials with them, so they must work.

didn’t seem to help them much at this year’s Prologue.

I saw this mentoned on Sheldon Brown’s website. Must have been around for a long time. They even have it quantified in terms of 40k TT.

The real savings comes when you carve dimples into the silicone.
