Listening to the piece right now. Good radio, and I like that the reporter seems to know what “Zipp racing wheels” are.
I have an old metal Silca pump with the leather gasket. It no longer works, and I ordered a replacement gasket, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out how to replace it. Mine is yellow and black, and from the mid-2000s.
I think I was pretty surprised at the price at the time I bought it from my local bike shop. They said it was the sort of thing I’d only buy once because it was so good. I took it and the replacement gasket back to the same bike shop a couple years later when the pump failed and they woudn’t attempt the fix.
Oh well, one of these days I’ll try to fix it again. I like it because it’s small and didn’t take up much space in my car.
Meanwhile, I’m getting by with a very good Blackburn floor pump that has the gauge up high, where it’s easier to see.
The maintenance fix is pretty easy, lots of guides on youtube. If this is like your silca, try this one:
Thanks for the link, it’s been a few years since I’ve tried to fix the pump. I’ll take a look.
When you put the new leather plunger gasket on, be sure and add a light coating of grease. This helps create a seal when you pump downward.
