I’m ready to bite the bullet today and sign up for an IM next year. I took some time off after a 2003 Kona. With Lake Placid and CdA both available now and IMmoo in September, what are folks planning out there??(I have not done any of the domestics…) I guess it depends on ones summer race plane…June, July, Sept…I am leaning towards Lake Placid, but a double loop bike course sounds a little troublesome…
What are you looking for? Are you bringing the family? Budget? What are you priorities? Course, competition, Kona qual, location?
I lot of people rave about LP, but I have always thought is screwed up my local race season, and a lot of people also complain about the location, and the price gouging.
I am going back to IM Moo this year. I did it in 2002 and liked the course. It is also the closest and most economical for me.
I don’t know anything about CdA, except that it’s early and far away for me.
Between LP and CdA, I picked LP earlier today (and I’ve done both). I live on the East Coast and I can drive to LP which is an added incentive. They are both great races. The swim is easier at LP because of the under water buoy line you can sight off of. Bike courses are comparable with LP probably being a little harder (a little more climbing, but not too much more). CdA has one big hill on the run course, LP has 2 big hills on the run course (both 2 lap courses). Can’t speak for MOO, but there’s your comparison on CdA and LP.
I don’t mean to bad mouth at all, but out of my 13 IMs, LP yesterday was the 1st where most of the drinks at the aid stations were warm. On the run all drinks were hot and they ran out of ice and cola very early (and I was relatively toward the front at that point). I quite frankly thought that was unacceptable. I had another competitor tell me the same thing happened last year. In fact going into some aid stations the volunteers apologized in advance yelling “sorry, all of our drinks are warm and we’re out of ice and coke.” I would have to seriously consider doing this race again if this is standard protocol. Maybe they had a bad day - I just don’t know. Again, the volunteers were fabulous!
