Sick of the GMAT

I’m taking the GMAT this Saturday, and I’m sick of studying for it. I just can’t wait to get this thing over with.

Any last minute advice for a non-mathematically inclined mind?

I briefly taught the GMAT for Kaplan, and have taken it myself. My advice is to be organized, especially when doing the reading comps, and make sure you read the questions first so you know what you’re looking for, as well as mentally diagram the short pieces so you know what each paragraph contains.

As for the math, its just practice, practice, practice. Seriously, its just being prepared for the “types” of questions asked.

Believe me, as painful as the GMAT is, its not as bad as the LSAT, or for that matter, the 3-year ordeal known as the CFA.

i hear you. i’m taking the lsat in december and am tired of studying for it. i think i’ve reached the point of diminishing returns.

how is the gmat structured? the lsat has 5 sections with 3 different varieties: a reading comp. section, logical reasoning (short reading questions), and a logic games sections. the logic games are the toughest at first but you can get better with practice. logical reasoning is very taxing.

good luck!

The GMAT is really basic - one quantitative section, one verbal section, two short essays. Nothing too out of the ordinary - pretty standard fare for a stadardized test.

I know the LSAT well - I was initially planning on law school and currently work at a major firm in Denver - but I’ve realized that I have no interest in the practical application of law. Law school is the education I’d like to have because I think it’s interesting and seems fun - however perverse that may be - but I don’t necessarily want to practice law. I know that I’m a run-my-own-business type of guy, so B-school is a much more practical piece of paper for me.

All that being said, I was a philosophy/english double major in college, so I haven’t looked at math in 6 years…which is posing a problem right now.

Anyways, diatribe over, best of luck on the LSAT’s. Let me know how you do - where are you looking to go?

seems surprising that the gmat would have twice as many writing sections as the lsat…and the lsat essay section isn’t even scored.

i’m from virginia so i’m applying to uva, william & mary, washington & lee, and regent (which is in va beach where i live) they are all tough to get into besides regent, but i could possibly get a full ride to regent based on my lsat score. uva would be my top choice but it is really competetive. w&m and w&l are more realistic.

how about you…where are you applying to business school?

Well, the writing sections are absurd. They don’t really have any affect on your score.

Anyways, I’m planning on applying to UC-Boulder, UC-Denver, Texas, Stanford, University of Denver, UCSD. That’s about it. I’m a little up in the air as to whether or not I should be going, but I’ll hold that out for another day. Stanford and Texas are rather sizable reach schools, but what the hell.
