I just did an Oly race in Verona WI this weekend. (wiscinsin criterium). Very well put on and fun race by the way. Anyway, my shoulders are really sore this mourning after a 24 minute swim in my wetsuit. I normally swim 60-80 min three times a week so I am a little surprised I am sore. Could this be related to not training in my suit or maybe more related to the forward siteing done in an open water swim? Should I do more wetsuit training? Thanks for the responses.
I’ve found that I always end up pretty sore after the first time or two that I swim in the open water each season, regardless of my swimming shape at the time. It seems like it’s related to sighting, just as you said. I don’t think it’s a wetsuit issue, as it’s happened to me without a wetsuit several times. I’d think it’s because when you’re swimming open water you have to stabilize yourself in the water (to keep from getting tossed around as much), and sighting.
I’d think that some wetsuit training is a good idea, but more than that I’d just say open water training would help. You could practice your sighting and swimming in a straight line too.
Are you swimming in a wetsuit designed for triathlon?
Does your wetsuit fit properly?
Was your wetsuit pulled up far enough?
I experienced a similar problem, but in my case it was that I had not pulled the wetsuit up high enough on my shoulders. Now I make sure that I pull the arms really, really high up to give my shoulders enough room to rotate without any tug from the suit.
The fit is good but the point about making sure it is pulled up high enough is well taken. Thanks
