Somtimes during my runs I randomly get pains in my shoulder. I don’t understand it. Can someone tell me what these pains are called and how to avoid and treat them during runs. Thanks
how bad are the pains?
I used to get some mild pain in my shoulders when I ran if I played a lot of hockey that week, never bad enough to pay much attention to it though.
Mild stiffness and pain can be a result of not having relaxed arm movement during your run. I’ve ran since 7th grade, and I have had aches and pains in my shoulders (usually right above my shoulder blade bone). From what I know by experimenting during runs, is that if your wrists and hands are lose but not jelly like, the pain holds off longer. I get it no matter what I do sometimes because I tend to overwork myself.
So just stay relaxed during your runs, and you’ll be fine. :]
I was having shoulder pain during races and I actually cured it with a bike fit. It turned out my
cockpit was too stretched out and I was straining my upper back & shoulders. On training rides I must
sit up more because it didn’t crop up on my Brick workouts.
The fit brought me closer to the bars and relaxed my shoulders…no more pain on the runs. At
least nowhere it shouldn’t be.
dehydration maybe???
Is this a recent development or something that begin at a distinct time? If so, have you fallen down recently (or did you fall down shortly before it began?)
Last year I fell while running and thought nothing of it. Then I developed shoulder pain so bad when I was running that I had to stop running completely for a couple of weeks. Apparently the fall damaged the tissue around my socket.
I had the same thing when I ran 3-4 days a week.
When I ran 6-7 days a week it disappeared.
Now that I’m back to 4 days a week, I notice it on long runs.
I think its just like anything, the more you do it, the less your body seems to mind. I do agree with what others said though, that it is probably you tensing up a little.
Check your posture. I had the same thing happen. I had got into the habit of leaning forward and it had forced stress on my shoulders and between the shoulder blades. It was very slight but it felt very strange when I was put back into the upright position. My form had really changed over the course of a few months and it took someone telling me what I was doing.

Be more specific…where is this pain exactly?
When does it begin and when does it end?
I had shoulder pain off and on when I ran. I felt like I was having a heartattack because it was my left shoulder. I drove my cardiologist nuts asking about it. After every test on my heart you can think of he said it was it great shape don’t worry take some tums possible reflux. Eventually the pain didn’t go away when done running and my arm became involved. They did an MRI of the neck and I had multiple herniated disks. One was impinging on the c7 nerve. Spinal fusion of c6-c7 and I’m better than new no pain.
Is it cold where you live right now? I have a bulging disc and arthritis and I notice in the winter I have a lot of upper body pain and stiffness while running outdoors in the cold. This year I have been determined to stay warmly dressed and that has helped me. Whenever I open up my jacket for ventilation, the neck starts to ache. It kind of sucks to be bundled up while running but the alternative isn’t pleasant either.
If the pain persists, you should go to the Doctor for a MRI and see if you have disc issues. You probably do, they are quite common. Best of luck to you!

I ask because the upper portion of the lungs extend up in to the area of the shoulders. If you have even mild asthma or bronchitis you can feel pain that seems to be in the shoulder. (front or back)
I’ve had cramps through my shoulders, near the collarbone.
I’ve also had pain when my shoulder is impinged, sometimes swinging my arms to run bothers it.
Could be a number of things.

It may be a referred pain as in http://www.aafp.org/afp/20020215/653.html . I had this type of pain which stopped when I quit drinking or eating anything that has caffeine.

I get this same thing and have for years. My pain is always in my right shoulder. Where? Put your left hand on your heart and then and then move it towards your shoulder diagonally. Just before the fingers get to the edge of the shoulder is where the pain is. It doesn’t happen every run and it never seems to happen on a treadmill.
Another pain I get is in my chest right around my heart. This one is even more random. You might say heartburn but that has never been an issue with me.
I also got fully checked out last year before my first triathlon and was told I was in good condition. CT-scan was negative.
Would really like to hear some of your thoughts.
Thanks,
Fred
