Should I take this sport seriously?

Can you swim?

Considering that you don’t peak until at least 37 for Ironman and your bike time would have placed you in the top 50 for bike time at Ironman Arizona, it might be worth a try. Can you swim?

I consider myself a good swimmer. I just havent put the time in the pool like i have on the pavement. I’m comfortable at a fast pace in the water, but i’m sure I have some techniques to work on. Swimming comes very natural, so I think thats a good thing. Taking my first real class tomorrow.

Are you seriously asking a foum if you should take a sport seriously or not, or do you just want to post your times up for all to see?

If it’s the former: go for it, why not.
If it’s the latter: well done.

I have seen many a 2:3X marathon person humbled in the Ironman. All your marathon time shows is that you have pretty good economy and likely pretty good fresh form. Means jack. No offence but runners miss the detail that you have got to swim and bike first AND all in a row.

Sounds like you are ‘Look at me’ enough for triathlon so get amongst it.

Why the hell don’t you do some tris on the bike you have now? You don’t need a top of the line bike to kick ass at tris. If you enter some races and win your AG with what you have now THEN try and go pro and be better than avg…

Mate, the movers & shakers in this sport never need to ask…they know, they believe, and they do. Good luck whatever you decide…

There is a lot of competition in the “Anonymous Internet Hero” division. Good luck!

The only way you will find out is to clip a pair of aerobas onto your road bike and “give it a try”. (sorry about the pun).

Remember that this sport will take up much of your time and all of your money.

Yes, by all means you should try this sport.

No, you should not take it seriously. It is a recreational activity.

should we take you seriously? or you looking for some attention?

The probability that you take your first swimming class when you are 24 years old, and then you go on to make a career out of triathlong is extremely low. But you’ve already taken running seriously, and wound up not being competitive at that, so it probably won’t hurt anymore to spend some time to see what you can do in this sport.

Keep striving Junior!

Do Duathlons
.

there is no money in the sport unless you win ironman, or go Olympic.

take it seriously at a age grouper, while having fun,

You will be a dominant triathlon runner as long as you have a solid long ride in place. If you aren’t a drowning risk now and you swim 3-4 times a week and 1-2 with a masters group you will be an excellent triathlete. I bet that your frustration with the sport will not come from a lack of achievement but rather a lack of competition that you deem worth beating, unless you live in Boulder etc.

As for hte big bills, just get a Cervelo P1 and call it good.

Oh, I didn’t see that you were considering a triathlon career. The answer to that is no. It’s a recreational activity, not a career. Best case scenario you bust your ass for 3-6 years to earn $15-30k and end up as a broke 30yr old with no work experience.

The amateur division has a lot of talented athletes that take the sport seriously and also live in reality: job, family etc.

dude, considering you screen name is your running PR, it suggests you have a good sized ego… enter a competitive race and throwdown. assuming you don’t drown you’ll be fine, you will get your ass kicked but getting humbled is always a good start…

As an average traiathlete, I strive to not come across as a d-bag.

the best case scenario is a bit better than that

I agree I came off a bit dbag-ish. Just trying to get a grasp on how well i could do in the sport. I know running. I dont know Tri’s.
