Should I get a new steed?

Ok team ST here is the situation. I’ve come across some extra $$$ and I’m thinking about pulling the trigger on a new ride.
I’ve been flip/flopping for awhile now. ST do I need a new bike? Or did I just get anxiety from watching IMC last week?
Very nice rides in transition!!!

OLD BIKE:
Cervelo P2
650 HEd tri spoke with a 650 RENN disc.

I bought this bike used in 2000. I’ve put on many good miles in all weather. Great bike. The issues dealing with 650 wheels are getting old. I don’t need 650 wheels. The bike was just a good deal back when I was looking.
For next year I’m focusing on Ironman distances.

Is it worth the money to get a new bike? Is a new bike with 700 wheels going to make me faster?

Thanks for the help!

Save your money for outrageous IM races fees and travel expenses. The bike you have will be fine.

THose 650’s (and the bike they’re on) are total trash. Worthless. So I suggest you get that shiny new 700C’d bike and ride it like… Well, ride it as fast as you can (and if it isn’t any faster than your old bike, don’t blame me). But then take that piece of trash 650 and send it to me. I’ll even pay the shipping so you don’t have to pay disposal fees.

Aren’t I such a nice guy?

The answer to the question is always “yes. get a new bike.”

I think you need a HOT road bike!

Or maybe I’m just projecting…

I believe the answer is always yes. N+1, so go ahead and plan for the purchase of your next one as well. Oh, and if you are a guy, never call you bike a steed. Shades of the “he said, he said” thread in the LR come to mind.

Edit: I meant to send that to the OP. But it is good to see you so active again Jodi.

I had a P2 once upon a time and I rode it pretty well, but in the end it was too slack in the seat tube for me. I recently borrowed a P2C from a friend and they are very similar in nearly all aspects except the carbon bike has smoother transition from tube to tube (though, of course, it is all one piece on the 2C). The big brains of ST told me that a P2C ought to be about 20 seconds faster over 40K than the P2. That’s not much for the price you will pay.

Soooo, if you want a new bike then buy one, but don’t expect it to be noticeably faster. I couldn’t not tell any difference in ride comfort or stiffness either.

Do take the advice from one person above and buy a nice road bike or one of the “Tri” bikes with a 76 degree seat tube and put drop bars and STI on it. It will be very nice to have on those days when you are not in the mood to ride the aerobars.

Is a new bike going to make me faster?

depends on the new bike :O

I have an '07 Dual, and I already want a new Bike. Of course you should spend the money burning a hole in your pocket. You know you will find something to blow it on. Might as well be a new ride. If not, you can always send me the money and I will buy a new bike. I was thinking about a Roark custom TI.

Asking this list if you should get another bike is like asking an alcoholic if you should have another drink.

So true. I think the OP should get 3 new bikes!

700c by themselves will be no faster.

I had a 54cm 650c P2K with disc and optional front wheels - Campy Shamal or Hed Jet 60.

Sold it for a few reasons:

  1. 650’s can’t be swapped with my road bike

  2. aluminium frames are harsh

  3. and the main reason was that I always had neck and crotch discomfort on that bike while riding steep. It was fine for sprints, but the longest I ever did was a 1/2 and was in agony. Couldn’t imagine doing a full IM on that bike.

Otherwise, it was a great bike. If you don’t have the same issues, particularly with comfort, then definately keep it.

Shh… He’s going to send it to me.

that is already a pretty aero bike you have. Depends how much. To get a faster bike you’re looking at a p3c. If you can’t afford that I’d invest the money and when this one falls apart buy whatever the latest superbike is.
