Should I be worried? (1)

I recently purchased a set of Planet X Pro Carbon 50’s from an online retailer. I won’t name them as I’m still awaiting a response. I was doing the tire mounting this morning and noticed that there was what appears to be repaired defects on each wheel that was covered with some type of a Quality Control sticker. I assume this was applied by the Planet X factory during final inspection. I’m concerned if these wheels are factory seconds. Additionally I’m concerned if they are structurally sound.

Peace,
Rob

The wheels appear to be just fine. That looks (from the photo) to be the point where some structural foam was injected into the composite shell, a normal and necessary part of the manufacturing process. It’s worth noting that I don’t sell this product or have any connection to them.

It is very common for consumers who have never owned high-performance racing equipment to be concerned about cosmetic issues that aren’t structural. If you look at the inside of a Formula 1 race car cockpit it looks pretty unfinished in there- that is the way it should be to keep it lightweight and function.

Racing equipment is designed and optimized for one thing predominantly: Performance. As such we often see compromises in aesthetic finish to keep the weight and cost within reasonable limits.

Thanks Tom, as always, your experience/knowledge is a major asset to us.

Peace,
Rob

You’re welcome. I should mention you were wise to ask about this and also smart to conduct a close enough inspection to notice it. Well done.

I can’t tell from one photo exactly what is going on there, so you certainly would do well to get the second opinion of someone you trust who is knowledgable in the field and has the ability to see it in person.

In general though, based strictly on what I saw in the photo you posted, that is not too alarming to me.

I always ask people, “If it were a helicopter, would you fly in it?”
