Other than getting a heavy/expensive Look Ergostem what is the shortest stem one can buy? Looking to get something shorter than a 90mm for 1 1/8 steerer and 31.8 bars
Why do you need to go so short? You really dont want to be too awful far behind the steering axis…
There is always another style handle bar too…
You’re a bad man Chip

And?
Thompson makes some SUPER SHORT stems…I still wonder why you would need one on a road or Tri bike.
I agree - down to 90mm OK. After that, me thinks he might be on the wrong size?

I’m using a Vision Sizemore 70mm stem. And, yes, my bike it too big for me.
Profile Design also makes a number of stems in 70mm.
3T also makes 70 & 80s.

I had to use a 70mm on my daughter’s new PX Stealth. She is on a small. Toyed with the idea of using a 60mm.
That is a little different My daughter is on a 70mm as well on her cross bike

Ive got an Oval concept 6cm Oversized.
I see you are from Ontario. Might I guess that you are looking for a short stem to get ready for the provincial ITTs this weekend? I’ve had a bugger of a time getting my handle bars within the 75cm limit (and I only have a 54cm bike!). The UCI restrictions have pushed my whole body back by 5cm.
I found a 50mm (might have been 60) 31.8 stem today at a shop in Hamilton. It was pretty light (less than 160g) and I believe it cost $30. I forget the name of it though. I could let you know in the morning if you are interested. I’ve also seen 60mm, 75mm, and 80mm stems, but I forget the prices.
I ended up getting a 50mm stem in a 26mm clamp… We will see how it affects handling tonight.

That’s the big question, isn’t it.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the shorter the stem the twitchier the handling, right? Perhaps even dangerously so.
Well, I did an hour ride tonight. The handling with the 50mm stem felt fine down in the aerobars. I did, however, feel some jitters when I was on the bull horns taking a drink.
I’m only doing this so that I can meet the UCI restrictions while maintaining a similar position to my tri set-up. I don’t plan on drinking during the race, so I think I’ll be fine.
