Short Distance Nerdery--Fuel Belt?

So… I can’t run and drink out of dixie cups… but I can drink out of fuel belt bottles without stopping.

Overkill for Olympic Distance Tri (10k) run??

If it allows you to go faster… why not? I suppose you can photoshop out the belt back home in your nerdery if it bothers you.

Try dumping half the water in the cup and bending the top into a spout?

Well if you can’t do it you can’t do it so you will need another solution.

However, it does seem a bit much since you have had an hour+ on the bike to hydrate well plus, typically 2 - 3 or more aid stations on the run. Having to deal with FuelBelt as good as a product as that is, is just something else you have to worry about and carry around.

If you can still have a fast transition and run the same speed while toting around the extra weight of a Fuel Belt - go for it. In a 10K I probably would only drink once at most. Slowing down for a few seconds to get the fluid in seems like it would be much faster overall that strapping on and running with a Fuel Belt. YMMV.

If it’s hot I just carry a bike bottle. Doesn’t slow me down at 10k tri pace, I can drink what I want and I can jettison it (at an aid station) without worrying about the cost. Putting a fuel belt on would be slow and fiddly in the heat of the race.

How much do you need to take with you? On runs of 8 miles or less I carry one of the FB bottles in my hand.

  • …or carry a disposable water bottle from the store for the first half of the run, throw away at the turnaround aid station.*

Done that before too. I tend to have more bike bottles than store water bottles lying around though

“I can’t run and drink out of dixie cups.”

Yes you can. Now in the race, slow down a little, grab the cup, pinch the top of the cup, take a couple sips, discard.
Thank you.

How often have you practice drinking out of dixie cups? Once or twice in a race?

Buy a sleeve of them and practice. You’ll have it figured out in no time. Like the others said, pinch the top and suck it back.

You figured out how to ride a bike, right?

Brad

You figured out how to ride a bike, right?

Barely.

Just chuck a few gel flasks in the front of your shorts in t1

Seriously - if this is a big issue, take in a lot on the bike instead and power-walk for about 5 seconds through an aid station or two.

Seriously, who cares what the people behind you think about your belt? Screw 'em! Do whatever works for you (within reason of course). Its not about looking cool out there, it’s about having fun and doing the best you can do. If that means carrying something like a fuelbelt (which I’ll admit I do on oly’s and longer) la de da! Its not about what other people think, that’s what high school was for!

No wonder I was getting strange looks… I put them in the BACK of my shorts
