Short Course Development Thread (per Ajax)

btw this is the British issue, there is not a single 2002 or younger female athlete in the 250 in the world ranking
spain has 5 in the top 150

france has 7 females and germany 10 females in the top 250, 2002 and younger.

the older females are so strong it’s not that easy to get international race starts. And while IAM not saying this is an big issue as there is some good talent , but the ranking suggests they don’t get the starts.

Ps I see links are not working just type in gbr and esp .

because GB views MTR as what pickle ball is to tennis in the olympics. Fad test event that will disappear soon

Men’s sprint finish. technical courses are exciting! would be cool if there was an XC style triathlon run, (not xterra type)

Obviously not. They got a gold and a bronze for MTR and hence more funding for their programme. They know that at the end of the day, with GTB, Potter, and Yee they’ll be up there with France and Germany.

The numbers tell a different story. Lombardi and Jorgensen both did T2 in 31 seconds.

No matter what time says, we all saw Gwen lead out of the water and then get gapped in the first seconds of the ride. Only then to bridge up, fool with her shoe and get dropped again, and fool with it again and lose an insurmountable gap going around the early round about. When she pulled up to a bike length I was really rooting for her to just glom on, take a break and recover, and then do some pulls later on. She now has to relive that huge mistake of not peddling outside the shoe for some period of time as to have fully gotten into the draft and caught her breath first…

Mentioned everyone but the Italians that got second, and without their best man

She got dropped by what 100 feet in a matter of moments when Lombardi “went”. She wasn’t going to stay on that wheel no matter what she did or didn’t do. Not in a 2 person group, if that had 10 people she’d have better chance as others would pull her up. But that’s MTR demands, it’s generally small group tactics.

that is the advantage if even officially non draft legal races are draft legal lol
more seriously Italy is defo a top 6 contender in LA and is likely to comfirm their Paris result.

Genuinely worried about Seregni’s performances though. She was so angry after both Tarragona and Quiberon individual races…

She lost a lot of time after the mount line, losing momentum and pace relative to Lombardi during the flying mount and first few pedal strokes.

That’s true.

You’re always so sure of your predictions, I actually saw something different. She rolled up onto the wheel and was confident enough to lock her shoe in, that was the big mistake. She must have felt at the time she was good to go(she of course wasn’t) but it was that move that triggered the next two that put her off the back. She just didn’t realize at the time she should have just stayed out of the shoe and kept peddling for perhaps another half mile, and then recovered enough to then fix the shoe. I mean she did close a pretty good gap(which she of course opened to sloppy mount) and felt ok enough to do up the shoe…I’m not sure either way if she would have stuck the whole way, but not sure why you are so sure she wouldn’t have. It just seemed to me that it was a double punch she couldn’t overcome. because as you say, she doesn’t have that power. I just think she has enough power to hold that wheel, but not with having had to chase it two times in such a short period of time…

And this all gets back to why we need Knibb in this slot at the games. Someone that can close gaps, and then have a great chance to even break away on the bike, and at the very least torture anyone trying to hang onto her and stinging their run. Just like the last games where she even and outran far superior runners because they lost a step on the end of the bike…

Cus it’s the weakest ability for GJ, and in a 2 woman breakaway any of the top 20 could pop her off, just as it happened. MTR demands quantify any weakness because of the small group tactics. It’s not that complicated. If you struggle on the bike and its well known GJ struggles on the bike, her riding in a 2 person break is not going to be a recipe for success. Again not that complicated, but if you must insist on every scenario having what ifs that’s on you.

Again every person in sport knows the US needs Knibb. I’m just trying to figure out how strong of a Knibb the US will have in 2028. You assume she’s going to automatically be the best mtr’r and that’s far from reality at this point. Maybe she does or maybe she doesn’t, automatically assuming she will be will be a terrible take based on all that she is doing currently.

You don’t understand the rules on relay qualification. Hamburg is the important race for now. As long as they stay top 10 they can explore and build experience.

Men’s side - on todays development path it looks like they are pushing Gar/Conway/Yee but judging by Yee’s performance the last couple of races I would question whether his heart is in triathlon at the moment. It isn’t guaranteed he will be in LA as a triathlete.

Women’s side - they were pushing Tilly Anema but the past couple of races it has been Cook. Cook has a good swim/bike so if she can improve her run she could be a good relay pick.

GBR will qualify 6 and all 6 could be discretionary, unless World Champion.

You think they’re “pushing” Cook or just giving up a good result? Looks like the old guard of Stapley and Evans nee Coldwell blew the competition out of the water (both recording the second times of their legs [this sounded weird but I’ll just leave it here], edged out only by Vilaca and van der Kaay respectively) while the younguns disappointed.

Regarding coverage, I wanted to point out 2 things :

  1. As somebody else mentioned, but I especially saw this during the relay, not the individual races : they only showed the front group. So for the last 2 legs, we got a close up shot at Lombardi then Coninx for like 30 minutes. Too bad cause there was so much action behind them, especially on the run. I think they only had 1 camera for the whole race…
  2. Related, but it seems there was a lot of moto drafting. Especially on the last 2 legs, it was a bit comical how much time Coninx and Lombardi were putting on the groups. Of course we don’t know how much effort they were putting in the chase, but at least on the last bike leg, we can assume Stapley and Vilaca were going full on to bridge to the chase pack, and they hovered around 50s for the whole ride it seems, without making any ground on Coninx. Also for Lombardi, she gained 15s on the chase pack during the first 3/4 of the race. Then the camera moto moved to film Jorgensen then came back to film her, but from behind. And she lost 15s on that last 1/4th.

I tried to see how far in front the moto was on drone shots, and I would guestimate 20-30m. So not blatant drafting but probably enough to make a good difference.

Hopefully World Tri see this and try to better educate the moto drivers. Drone shots, if done a little bit better, could be great, because it helps a lot to see the bigger picture. The problem was not seeing clearly enough who the athletes were.

I think the problem with motos is that on that type of course they are basically always create interference right? Whether in front group or in between groups, they basically have no where to go. Can they take advantage of still shots or drone shots? But it seems like motos are the easiest to get the action, but again these courses are 5km 8 turns per lap type of crit course.

You act as if this is some wild assumption and totally unwarranted. Here’s what I’m looking at. She is the best relay person next to Spivey we have right now, she is young and getting better at everything she does. I look at what is in the pipeline, and I see no one even close to her on a bad day, yet alone her on a great day. You twisted my words(once again) when I said she wouldn’t have to be completely on in her 1 mile run. That means a few seconds, because she is not now finishing, doesn’t have to sprint the best runners in the world, and she has an anchor teammate(assuming Pearson) who can swim up a few seconds lost in the run if need be. If all the best ladies on the 3rd leg come off the bike together, she should be able to limit any loss to seconds. Pearson can out swim just about any anchor leg guys, like Yee and Wilde(if there) and get an even start on the bike. That will be their strategy if all our usual players are there, and it is one that has gotten Knibb and the US two silver medals..Not sure why you seem to be so negative to this approach, it is the best we have at the moment and no one here is saying anything is a slam dunk. Just going off history and how these athletes perform in that situation..

Just to add that super stoked that Seth is really on great sprint form, despite him now moving over to half distance and doing very well there too. He is a natural born sprinter, we will need him to go big on that 2nd leg in order to medal…

I’m not twisting your words nor am I being negative. She is currently ~15-20s back of the best runners in the sport *currently at 1mi effort. That can all change, it can improve or it can get worse. That’s where we are at currently. Nothing less nothing more.

She’s not getting better at itu currently. That’s the point, she has a ton to improve upon, maybe she will or maybe she won’t. I’m not buying this idea she is just showing up and winning, you can as a fanboy.
