what is the benefit of short clip ons?
They are designed for a road geometry bike with a slacker 72-74 seat angle. If you put the longer length aero bars on a road bike you tend to be too stretched out resulting in discomfort in the aero position. I have a set of Cobb’s original “big slam” bars, which are essentially Profile Jammer GT’s on my TCR road bike. Sometimes I use a small size Syntace C2 instead. I swap them back and forth depending on my mood.
so its really just ab comfort?

That’s part of it, but also mechanical effeciency. To get a grasp of where/why it began read Cobb’s article on the slam position. They also work in a standard road position.
