I’ve fairly new to running, and I’m having a hard time finding shoes that don’t hurt me. I was just about to order some Newtons, when I realized I had not rational reason whatsoever to do this, since I don’t know the first thing about shoes. So I thought I’d see if ST has any recommendations. Was born with club feet, which, after about 4 operations are mostly pointed forwards, but not quite. I have no arches to speak of, and my feet are very wide. I’m trying to up my mileage but it is killing my ankles.
I have suspicion that I don’t want any arch support, since I don’t really have arches, but am not sure. Does that mean I want a “stability” shoe?
it probably means you need a motion control shoe, but it’s impossible for anyone here to tell you what you need. Do yourself a big favor and go to your local running store (a specialty store, not sports authority or a generic shoe store) and get fitted with the proper shoes. You might pay a little more, but you’ll have something that works
Were you casted as an infant or did you have a posterior-lateral release surgery (i.e. Turco procedure) to correct your clubfoot? Do you have any residual equinus deformity?
HUGE variations in residual clubfoot deformities from debilitating (I’ve been to the Baja project for crippled children in Mexico) to mild.
My educated guess is to NOT order any Newtons though :o
look in your phone book, or google a running store near you.
Theres a store about an hour from me that i will soon be visiting- they videotape your legs/feet while running on a treadmill, analyze your gait and how you land and all that, then reccomend a type of shoe, and specific ones that will work for what you’re doing… of course, you may feel guilted into buying a pair of shoes from them- but if you’ve got the money to buy a pair of newtons on a whim, i doubt thatll be an issue for you.
something along those lines might be a solution.
edit: the name of the store is Fleet Feet- I guess they’re a franchise- see if theres one around you
I was casted, and spent a lot of time when I was older (until grade 2 I think) in some thing that locked my feet to a bar. I hated it! I honestly couldn’t say what operations I’ve had, but there are scars along the back from heel to lower calf, and on the sides, from 1 inch down from the big toe to 1 inch from my heel. As a teenager, I had some kind of orthotic that went up to my calf and had hinges, not sure what it was called. I was very fortunate that this didn’t interfere with sports too much, I played high level hockey, and lots of rugby and tennis. I never ran seriously until last year (am 30 now), and while I LOVE it, the pain is getting annoying, and I’ve noticed it correlates to what shoes I wear (one pair is much better than the others) FWIW I’m mediocre runner (42’ 10k), but I’m working hard to improve, doing a combination of speed sessions and longer 15-20k runs.
@brikins14 - I had no idea you could get that sort of thing done, very cool, I’ll check that out. I’m in Ottawa, which is FULL of runners, so there must be something like that here.
That was a DB (Dennis-Brown Bar) and your scar descriptions are of a posteromedial release (i.e. the Turco procedure - named for the crazy old CT orthopedist who coined the procedure)
Most all people who have had a Turco procedure experience some posterior muscle group equinus, so be diligent with your stretching!
