Inspired by a discussion from another thread about why there are so many more bike threads than anything else, this is the shoe porn thread. No, it’s not that. Keep your foot fetishes in the Lavender Room, please.
Post your best shoe pics. Let’s see how long it goes.
To get things rolling, here’s the original Nike Oregon Waffle shoes:
Nice…I had a pair of Oregon Waffles waaaaaaaaaaay back…good x-country shoes. I should add that they were hand-me-downs from a neighbor kid across the street a few years older than me. But they were my first “real” running shoes, so I loved them…Moved on to some Nike Internationals (ists?..can’t remember the name exactly, blue mesh with yellow swoosh…)
I had both the shoes in the photo in High school - the infamous Oregon Waffle racer and the Pre-Montreal spikes in the background. In '74 and '75 practically every highschool kid who raced cross-country and was any good had a pair of Orgeon Waffles. I have pictures from my High School races back then of the lead packs of 20 or so runners and all of us are wearing Oregon Waffles! I remeber finishing some of these really muddly cross-country races and not being able to even recognize the shoes - they were completely brown and black with mud. We would often just walk right into the showers after a race with shoes and race uniforms on!
The Pre-Montreals where my first serious track spikes. Very comfortable as I seem to recall - great padding for spike and they had a one piece leather front of the upper that was very comfortable a cool.
Back then outside of the really hard-core running crowd Nike was unkown. Hard to believe that now. Back then in our area( Toronto, Ontario) you could not buy the Nike shoes at Retail. The local distributor at the time, Dave Ellis, would sell them out of the truck of his car at high school cross country and track meets. This was the same business model that Phil Knight had used in the US to launch the brand.
As for the Sock Racers - simply the most comfortable road racing flat of all time! It felt like running bare-foot but with the padding of a light-weight trainer. They would get trashed after 3 - 4 races, but that was OK, cause I had a sponsorship deal with Nike at the time!
