Are men required to wear shirts at USAT Nationals in Omaha? Or can they get away with wearing only tri shorts? Thank you for your help as this will be a first time experience for my 20 year old son.
The USAT Competitive Rules don’t say one way or another. This is supposed to be a “National Championship” so, in my opinion, going shirtless would be tacky. But, I’m and old foggie :-).
I only thought they enforced at world level events, not US nationals.
But I agree, it looks terrible

They should be, that and speedos, two things the sport can now do without
.
Unless the rules have changed since last year, and I am pretty sure they have not, shirts are not required. I raced there last year shirtless, as did many other men. And I have done four USAT races this year, all shirtless, no issues, seen by USAT officials at every race.
Aero helmets, compression socks, fuel belts, tri shorts, fat-bottomed shoes, neon? How can anyone insist that triathletes must wear shirts for aesthetic reasons?
I don’t race to get my photo posted on social media. I race to go as fast as possible and if I’m hot, I’d like to be able to take off my shirt. Thank you USAT for your continued support!

I remember this question coming up at the race meeting 2 years ago in Milwaukee…official said shirts are a WTC rule, not a USAT rule. Shirtless men were ok.
Shirts are an ITU Rule, which USAT doesn’t enforce, but if you race pretty much in any other country in the world, is enforced (whether it’s world level event, or a local race that is sanctioned).
Your chest must be covered. It’s a USAT rule but it is at the discretion of the race director. At a USAT national Champ? no way.
I’m unable to find that rule:

I’m with you… I wished I was just in shorts last year!
Otherwise to pile on, if you want to race shirtless at Nationals, go for it there is no rule saying you can’t!

I don’t know where it is either, but it’s definitely a thing. Penalties get handed out left and right at USAT collegiate Nats every year. 2 minutes for an uncovered chest.
My point is: It’s not a USAT rule…it’s someone else’s
.
For all you know they may include it under sportsmanship or being professional or something like that. Just wear a shirt. It’s not the end of the world.
You said:

But it’s not a USAT rule according to the rule book I linked straight from the USAT website.
Bro, idk why you’re getting so up in arms about this. I’ve had conversations with USAT officials about this. I’m not sure how they deem it to be a rule, but it is one. They could say that not wearing a shirt is in violation of 3.3b. “Conduct themselves in a manner that is not offensive in any way to fellow participants, spectators, officials or volunteers and is considered reasonable and acceptable in the community”
Be a big boy, wear a tri suit.
Correct. It is not a USAT rule. I spoke went the officials table at Age-Group Nationals last year and specifically asked about it. I raced shirtless without issue- other than people judging me as “tacky” ![]()
Is there a rule about women having to wear a shirt? While I agree that it’s tacky and question how much temperature cooler it is to each his own.
I’m not getting so up in arms. You said it was a USAT rule and it’s not, it appears you don’t want to admit you were mistaken

It’s an ITU rule, which seem funny to me because in Europe it’s okay for women to go topless in public but not okay for men to shirtless in a race?
