a few questions for those who have successfully shipped their bikes out of town for races:
is there a way to ship bikes without completely dismantling them? Any way I can keep my bike (and its current dialed-in fit) intact and get it to the race?
If I do have to dismantle it, what is the best route to getting it back together? Do I get my LBS to take measurements and then get refitted at the race site? Where do I ship it? Do local bike shops in Tempe put them back together?
Any and all advice is appreciated.
Have your LBS take it apart and if you have been fitted by them, send your measurements with your bike. Send it to Landis Cyclery in south Tempe and have Brent put it together for you. You can have Perry take a look at your fit if you would like and you will be all set. I think the website is:
Or buy or rent a bike case from your LBS - tape off your seatpost, stem height and angle - remove the pedals and wheels, lay the aero bars in flat - and box the bike and take it with you on the plane.
Continental =$80 each way = America West is doing a deal through the IMAZ site.
Twenty minutes to set your bike up at the other end - it arrives with you - no shipping it a week ahead of time.
Take it to a local bike shop - I agree with the earlier post about Landis - great people - when you get there - reverse the procedure on the way back.
100% peace of mind - your bike is traveling for a total of four hours max - not 7 days.
Not much to putting them back together - these cases are fairly large and secure.
