Always rode a 12-25 10sp cassette. I live in a pretty flat area and now that I train with HRM I find myself coasting less and pedaling more and considering getting something in the 11-* range fo sprint tri’s and more big gears. Any 11-X cassette ratio’s I should consider or is the 12-25 pretty much the best general casette out there?
If you can spin out a 53 x 11 and you coast to slow down to get back to the gear inches to give you forward mechanical pressure…
And you are NOT on a Compact Crank, or in the smallest chain ring of a triple. And you are NOT on a bike with 650 wheels
Get your pro card. 12x25 is great for over 90+ % of folks out there on any type of roads.
common sense is worthless
.
Only on a fast group ride in a pace line have I ever found myself looking for a bigger gear than 53-12. Never said I spun out the biggest gear on the casette. But they do make ratio’s other than 12-25’s; which has been fine, but was just wanted to consider other ratio’s with more even spacing as I don’t use the 25 gear a lot.
But I guess they should throw all those other casette options away, 12-25 for everyone, it works for 90% of the riders…
If you’re so concerned, get the 11-20 straight block, mr. smartypants. The 12-25 works great, it’s the nutjobs who live in the flat lands that think they’ll somehow improve something by adjusting their gear ratios on their recreation bicycle that the other ratios are for.
Just a thought You might consider going to 54/42 chain rings and not mess with your 12/25
.
What are you missing? I have heard some folks complain if the dont have a 19, and I dont like to ride a 53/39 with out a 19. But, if you get ride of the 12/25 and go to a straight block, what are you going to do when you get to a hill and have a 21 as your large cog and have to mash up a hill? Seems to me you are trying to solve a problem you dont have.
