Anyone having a rattle concern with a 10 Speed Bar End shifter should have their shop contact Shimano.
They have an updated shim and lock ring that takes care of the problem. I contacted them recently and was sent the updated parts, installed them and the rattle is gone…plus the shift is much more precise!!
They told me only a few out there have this concern. I’ve only worked on 4 and all 4 had the rattle.
Do you have any more details? Is there a part number or some Shimano notice talking about this issue? My shifter rattles/buzzes and your note prompted me to visit my LBS. They didn’t know about the fix. Nor did Shimano Canada when we called.
I would be interested in this also because the rattle is rather annoying. If you could post the info on who you talked to it would be appreciated. Thank You.
Mine rattle too! I just got back to riding since knee surgery. I had my trek time trial built in November, but because I live in Minnesota and surgery, I have only ridden it a handful of miles. At first it did not rattle, but the more I used it, the more it rattled. I called the number and the customer service guy sent out the repair kit asap! Now that is service, but the kind you would expect for the price.
I know this is an old issue. After much time, Shimano Canada shipped some replacement parts to my LBS. This piece looked identical to the one it was replacing. Was this true in your case? I’m wondering since I still get the rattling sound.
In my experiences the repair did not require replacing parts. The repair kit was a small super thin washer and a lockring, which was installed into the existing shifter…no parts were replaced.
Sounds to me that Shimano Canada should call Shimano USA.
My only experience with the 9 speed shifter rattling involved the cable housing ferrule loose in the shifter. You may want to look at the ferrule and housing. Also, make sure it is the shifter and NOT a rattle coming from somewhere else like the brake levers, cables, ferrules, etc.
Some of these rattles can be hard to pinpoint, since Aluminum transmits the noise so well.
Towards the end of the summer, Shimano USA shipped the correct part to Shimano Canada who sent the two pieces on to me and I eventually installed them.
