Do all Shimano 10 speed bottom brackets creak? Mine did (Ultegra), and so do all of my friends (Ultegra, Dra-Ace, and compact version). Just wondering if this is common. I need to buy a new set of cranks / bb, but this has me looking at something with an ISIS bottom bracket instead of the external Shimano style. Is there an easy fix to this? Am I doing something wrong during the install? Love the simplicity of the Shimano cranks and they way the look and perform, but the creak is just annoying.
If the hand tightened nut on the non drive side of the bike isn’t tightened enough you can get some creaking. Similarly, if the two 5 mm bolts aren’t tightened quite to spec. A little additional greese on the spline helps as well.
I had a creak develop after ~1000 miles that I thought was coming from the BB, but it was the two non-drive crank arm bolts that jonblyer mentions. Over 1500 miles since then and no problems.

Have about 10K on my DA 10sp and no issues so far…
No creaks on any of my 5 bikes. Make sure everything is tightened to spec as mentioned above
I too had a creak and it would get louder when I got out of the saddle to pedal. I took out the arms, BB cups, and removed the pedals. I reinstalled everything w/ anti-seize compound on all the threads and a little on the faces of the BB cups where they meet the frame. The creak went away and hasn’t come back.

Same here. My creaking only manifests itself when I’m out of the saddle going up hill (i.e. under heavy load).
If I disassemble the unit and put it all back together, the creaks disappear for a while. But they’ve always come back after a few hundred miles.
Also check the chain ring bolts, they can cause a creek.
if you have any BB noise… i know it shounds stupid but check that both quick release on the wheels are very tight… that s how 95% of creaking noise are fix!!! BB 10 speed rarely make noise… they are very good design and hard to screw up…
Just a note to say that I HAD a creak – but after some re-packing and tightening the creak is gone – I have the new Ultegra 10 with the external bottom bracket. From all of these posts seems that your problem can be solved. In my case the creak was worse when I would stand up out of the saddle… The creak was driving me crazy amidst the solitude of the ride!
No problems with my compact.
